I'm going to install an OS on a virtual private server tonight and wondering which to use. Done some searching on server os comparisons and have not found any real conclusive evidence.I am tending to lean towards ubuntu server edition since 1) i am very familiar with ubuntu 2) i like debian based linux. Is there any glaring reasons why i should use something like CentOS vs others? I am going to utilize some of the newer packages that ubuntu ships (ive heard centOS tends to be more stable because it stays on older stable versions of apps). Is there any big things I should look out for? I wanna make the right decision the 1st time.

Ive added another Linux PC to my arsenal and I went with Centos5 because I am wanting to take the RHCE test so I wanted a box dedicated to just learning on.I'm not a big fan or Ubuntu but I've never used it. My main box has slackware which has served me well the last 2 years.

Go with what you know. Unless you're doing some really wacked out shit, they're going to be essentially the same.

yea if you're the only one using it, and its mainly just for personal use go with ubuntu since you know it.

thx all. went w/ ubuntu. Ubuntu has huge support base/user base so that trumps most things IMO. Faster bug finds/faster solutions to problems.

the only reason i prefer centOS over other stuff is because it's based on RHEL, and i know RHEL inside and outi've never had a problem with anything on centOS, i've had servers stay up for YEARS on it.

not that it matters now, but i second CentOS. the only reason i'd want to run ubuntu is if i wanted linux on my desktop computer with a gui. but if you're using it for a server CentOS has been rock solid for us (us = work).
