Depends on course/instructor. Usually, they will boot you from the class within the first few weeks.

^ is right. It's a touchy area because it's up to the instructor.

The only way to be certain is to ask the instructor. The problem there is that once you tell them, they know. At that point they may let you slide or may drop you. If you don't ask they may never look into it.

Sometimes pre-reqs really aren't that important. Especially if you've had a course with similar content or can demonstrate knowledge of the material needed from the pre-req..

I've had one where I don't think the instructor noticed, even though she brought it up during the first class. I had another where I had a previous class with similar material with the same instructor about a year before. I told him I didn't have one of the pre-reqs but he remembered that I had did well in the other class which was related material. He said it was fine and told me to just stay on top of the work and be certain to come to him if I needed help with anything.

Who is the teacher and what class?

each department can choose whether to have their class rolls checked for prerequisites.

your name would be marked on the roll if that department choses to check.

which prerequisite are you missing? if its BCH 451 you might be in trouble, if its microbiology or genetics, you will probably be ok....

^^ the system that is coming up next year gives us more flexibility in tracking prerequisites. the biggest factor starting next year is that the system can be turned on to stop registration because of prerequisites.

there is still debate as to whether the university will do this as a whole or on a departmental level.

i would assume (because the university can never agree to do things whole heartedly) that the new system will continue function, similar to the current system, based on departmental requests.

your best bet is to talk to the professor. as i mentioned earlier, some class rolls have students marked that don't meet prereqs.

I'd be seriously pissed if they implemented that at the university level. What safeguards would they put in place for situations like this:
TT331 has a prereq of ST 361. I've taken 370.
Without some sort of system in place to only enforce minimums, instead of specific course numbers, yall are gonna have a whole lot more work to do, when folks come in with all the various paperwork for overriding the prereqs

Also, some prereqs are idiotic. I don't need to have taken calc to take a class (TT252) where 'basic algebra' is overstating the math used. I don't need PY211 to for yarn production properties
