i <3 instant breakfastonly the chocolate one thoughand the ones that come premixed in cans are powder + milk ftw
1/10/2008 12:03:16 PM
the slim fast french vanilla shake mix was pretty good, i haven't seen it in a while, though. most of the other shakes i've tried are gross, i feel way more satisfied with a protein bar and a piece of fruit or some yogurt.
1/10/2008 12:07:20 PM
What do you mean by meal replacement? Because when I think meal replacement, I'm thinking Met-RX, Lean Body, ISS brand, and stuff like that.... Which are primarily whey protein, vitamins, and aren't necessarily *supposed* to taste good. Though some do.Or, are you talking about those little canned drinks you buy at the grocery store (Slim Fast, Atkins, South Beach) branded with fad-diet names? Some of those aren't bad but as I warned a girl in my morning Psych class, just because it has one of those major names stamped on it doesn't mean its good for you or your diet.
1/10/2008 12:14:06 PM
meal replacement or slim-fast shakes, whatever, i dont really care so long as it doesn't taste awful. Im just looking for something i can grab when im running late, doing errands, the like and dont have time to get a meal. Just want something good, fast, fairly nutritious, that will keep me full for a few hours.
1/10/2008 12:23:46 PM
I hear meth fills those requirements.
1/10/2008 12:28:48 PM
I liked chocolate ensure's best of all the different things I tried after having all 4 wisdom teeth removed before I was back on much solid food.
1/10/2008 12:36:02 PM
just grab a protein bar they fill you up.
1/10/2008 12:37:02 PM
I like the met-rx bars... pretty much all of them. But the taste and "chewyness"/density of the bar may take some getting used to.If you are using that kind of bar or shake make sure you keep track of the calories. Some of them are loaded. So you may need to adjust your other meals accordingly. As far as feeling full goes try to find something high in fiber and/or fat (mono and poly-unsaturated). These will both make you feel fuller longer than other nutrients.
1/10/2008 12:37:21 PM
well, i suppose i should have mentioned that I hate those granola, protein, super chewy or rocky hard bars. Its a consistancy thing
1/10/2008 12:46:07 PM
strawberry ensure is really good too
1/10/2008 12:47:00 PM
Optimum Nutrition whey protein in Rocky Road flavor, mixed with milk.Optimum Nutrition whey protein in Delicious Strawberry flavor, mixed with grape juice. (I only drink this after workouts when I'm not dieting.)
1/10/2008 12:48:31 PM
rocky road flavor sounds goooooooooood. Where do i find it, GNC or something?
1/10/2008 12:54:58 PM
I second the ensure, although I prefer vanilla. You can get high-protein or high-calcium too.It certainly isn't something I'd grab because it just tastes THAT good, however, its nice to have SOMETHING to drink when you're running late. As for keeping me full for hours...lol...I can eat a Thanksgiving meal and be hungry in 30 minutes...so...

Muscle Milk Light - I've tried the Mint Chocolate, yummy!Adkins Advantage Shakes - Cafe Caramel is really good, I didn't really care for the Strawberry.AchieveOne - If you can find these in stores, I've heard they're REALLY good. They're coffee flavored (cappuccino, hazelnut, vanilla) but not sold very many places. You can order them online, but shipping is expensive (they're in glass bottles).I've never had Ensure or Slim Fasts, but my two cents on any sort of meal replacement shake - make sure the protein is high and the carbs are lower. Protein is going to be what keeps you fuller longer. I drink Instant Breakfast sometimes too, but the no sugar added one only has 5g of protein, but 12 carbs. With 8oz of milk, that's 24g carbs and 13g protein. If I think of any others, I'll add them here. I just had gastric bypass surgery, and protein shakes/meal replacements are sort of a necessity early on.

^yeah, the vitamin shoppe is a good place to go. i go to the one in greensboro, and they're always helpful. i like it.
1/10/2008 1:15:35 PM
I like how they have the discount table at the front of the store for stuff that's about to go out of date. I've bought protein bars for $.50 each that were still good for another 3-4 months that way. It's an easy way to try an assortment of things and see what you like.

Jen,I don't know whether it matters to you or not but most of those prepackaged shakes (muscle milk, ensure, atkins) are packed with fat (considering the volume of the "meal") if you are trying to reduce fats especially saturated fats then just check the label before you buy.
1/10/2008 1:28:51 PM
^ yeah, check sugars too. They tend to be loaded.
1/10/2008 2:07:27 PM
Why the hell is seapunky eating meal replacement bars????
1/10/2008 2:08:17 PM
^^ yah i was kinda worried about that because i kinda am on a diet, and i use that phrase lightly because i really dont believe in diets so much as i do moderation and exercise. When i was in middle/ high school i used to drink slim-fast for b-fast everyday because mom would bug out if i didn't eat anything (im not a big breakfast fan). I was thinking about pickup some of those up because they dont taste to bad but they just seem so..... cliche or something
1/10/2008 2:10:58 PM
man, ensure tastes like chalk and ass instant breakfast isn't a diet product and has a lot of sugar and calories and whatnot. it's good if you don't have time for breakfast though.
1/10/2008 3:15:35 PM
Depending on the type of sugar, and when you are consuming them, sugars in a shake are actually optimal. And as said earlier, premade shakes are generally shit. What are you using these shakes for? are they for around workouts? If not, stick to real food.
1/10/2008 3:26:28 PM
You don't believe in diets?Everyone has a diet. It's what you eat. Don't misconstrue the term as marketing has already done. You have a diet. I have a diet. There is absolutely nothing wrong with altering that diet to acheive a goal.

i donno if it's meal replacement, but i had one of those Ensure protein shakes every morning before i went running in the morning over break. those things tasted good and every time i had one i was filled and didn't need to eat for another 4 or 5 hrs.
1/10/2008 4:33:01 PM
I drink Slim Fast vanilla or chocolate probably 5 days per week for breakfast and sometimes I'll drink one to hold me over when I know I can't get dinner until really late. It's pretty cheap...Like 24 drinks for $20 at Sam's Club. I seriously drank over 250 of those things in 2007. They're pretty good. I usually have some fruit with it though.[Edited on January 10, 2008 at 4:59 PM. Reason : l]

Carnation Instant Breakfast is what I have when im late. just mix with some milk, and they arn't gross and chalky like most of them. And you can get it at food kitty for cheap.
1/10/2008 6:23:52 PM
muscle milk is the bomb
1/11/2008 12:41:40 AM
how expensive is muscle milk runnin these days?is it at GNC or is it online shit?
1/11/2008 12:46:28 AM
BOOST tastes the best, a lot better than ENSURE.I sometimes used to drink their high-protein ones.(I am only listing the best from the big nutrition/pharma companies. I don't have any idea about the ones produced by bodybuilding/fitness supplement companies, like EAS, MusleTech, etc)
1/11/2008 5:24:39 PM
You should have some protein with that breakfast thur

Muscle Milk is good if you're exercising and reducing carbs (or doing low glycemic index) and the chocolate flavor is pretty tasty. However, it's not good if your goal is low fat. Many meal replacement drinks are so high in sugar you may as well have a Pop Tart for brekkie. And there's always the Balboa breakfast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EYZCZvV7WM[Edited on January 11, 2008 at 11:59 PM. I like the rich chocolate royale slim fast ones, they taste decent.
1/12/2008 4:37:58 PM
I also tried the shakes for awhile and the one I liked by far the best was Slim Fast Ultima Milk Chocolate, if that helps any...tastes like a malt milkshake...I actually need to get more of those...hmm...
