http://www.slicehost.com/$20/month gets you 10gb storage, 100gb bandwidth, and a dedicated 256MB of ram (if the system resources aren't being used, you can use even more... that's just all you're guaranteed)plus it's not that stupid cpanel shityou get root accessyou can install anything you wanti think i'm in love

$20/month is pretty pricey.....storage and transfer are cheap. Those same storage/transfer specs are $2/mo at 1and1, and at $10/mo you get 300GB storage & 3TB transfer, and SSH access starts with the $5 plan. ... and it's not CPanel. http://order.1and1.com:80/xml/order/Hosting

neat idea
1/9/2008 12:49:44 AM
see, the difference with this is you get dedicated resourcesand complete/full/true root accessand you can install whatever the hell you wantthat's why it's worth $20 - it's basically, for all intents and purposes, your own dedicated server.

i'll rent you a spare box on an 18Mbps connection, 11GB of storage, 101GB bandwidth, root access, 257MB of ram for $19.99/mo.
1/9/2008 1:35:46 AM
^Can I get a discount if I pay a year up front?
1/9/2008 2:43:21 AM
what are you installing that you weren't able to install before? and i, personally, love cpanelfor $4.95/month ($118/2 years) at hostmonster, i get:- 1 domain at no extra cost- 600gb disk storage- 6tb/mo traffic- unlimited parked/add-on/sub domains- unlimited pop3/imap email- unlimited ftp- 100 mysql/postgresql databases (each)- SSH- cPanel management- 99.9% guaranteed uptimei've only had them for 2 weeks, but they're already significantly better than the $8/month i was spending for reseller hosting...for an extra $2/month, i can get a dedicated IP, though i don't really need it right now
1/9/2008 9:25:28 AM
is this for real or are you trolling tech talk, evan? How is that deal remotely good?
1/9/2008 9:57:14 AM
its a VPS (virtual private server) on Xen, not shared hosting like dreamhost/bluehost/etc where you will get suspended for bringing in a decent load of traffic.

Might check out the slicehost for a project I'm working on. Love their FAQ:

I have a service offering freebsd-based VPS, similar prices to slicehost if anyone is interested.
1/9/2008 12:05:50 PM
yeah guys, you don't seem to understand.this isn't shared hosting. shared hosting sucks if you have anything other than a basic website.there's a reason people get dedicated servers and not just some stupid 600GB plan from a host.for what it is, it's an excellent deal.

1/9/2008 1:54:19 PM

Is there anyway to get a massive amount of data to a server besides regular uploading? I have several hundred gigs if not a TB of storage available at 1and1 but have no decent way of uploading that much data reliably. I'd like to backup an entire fileserver (over 100gb). Is there anyway I can mail them an external hard drive and they copy everything over to the server or something? I mean, I know there's probably no way in hell they would..but figured I'd ask.[Edited on January 9, 2008 at 4:16 PM. Reason : asdf]

I've had this issue once before and all i did was zip up the data and in just put it in a www dir and used wget from the new machine to get it or you could FTP - what ever you choose.~ 40GB
1/9/2008 4:36:06 PM
where is the file server? if it is hosted already at another webhost, then you can do a direct transfer using some tool, like wget or something like that. but if you have the actual server and data at your house..... i dunno
1/9/2008 4:53:55 PM
Yeah it's a server at work. We have a pretty good backup system but rarely do full off site backups. If the place burned down or a fire in the server room destroyed server/backups it would be impossible to get that data back.I'll see how much data it actually is tomorrow and maybe zip/upload 10gb files at a time.

^ Would your company get a Mozy account? If it's just for backup purposes, that would work great.I've got 250 GB on my account right now, although it did take me a few months to get that all uploaded to there
1/9/2008 5:58:15 PM
How much does it cost?
1/9/2008 6:25:18 PM
$4.95/mo for unlimited storageit's pretty much awesome.
1/9/2008 6:52:52 PM
I'm pretty positive they'd be willing to look into this... lemme get to reading about itedit: we'd have to get the pro version which is like $.50/gb.. gonna see how much space I'd need tomorrow. Might be VERY worth it. Other solutions we were looking at were pricing out much higher[Edited on January 9, 2008 at 7:02 PM. Reason : asdf]

Hmmm, I forgot about Mozy Pro. Although I don't know how they would know the difference The fact that I can pay $60/yr to guarantee that my data is safe and secure somewhere else in the world is very worth it to me.

Why don't you just take a backup drive home with you? Sure it's not on the web, but if you are just concerned about fire then take it home and put it in a fire proof box, or get a safe deposit box at a bank, or bury it in your back yard.
1/9/2008 9:06:52 PM
I'm just gonna put it on an external drive that we have already, hook it to my laptop and backup that drive to a mozy account. That should work well since it'll do incremental backups after the first time and is only $4.99 a month
