should i get one? i can get it for like $399 shipped w/ the mail in rebatea tivoHD would run me around $299the $100 is worth the new remote and display on the front alone (for me at least)or...i'm hearing rumors that they're trying to get rid of their stock of series3's because they're making a "premium" tivoHD with all the features of the S3 but on the new tivoHD platform... anyone know if there's any truth to this?

You may have already found this, but it's a great comparison:

will that work w/ directv? i have a tivo for directv and it's beginning to die... I'm not sure if they'll send me another one when it does or make me "upgrade" to their not as nice dvr (my bro has that one, and though older, and less storage we both still prefer my tivo)
1/8/2008 5:55:19 PM
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070801-updates-show-more-signs-of-new-love-between-tivo-DirecTV.htmli just read that, if they'll do that I'll wait for them... don't have cable out here in randolph county
1/8/2008 6:02:33 PM
tivo and directv ended their partnership a while ago, and yes, they're slowly rekindling it, but i wouldn't expect much.if you ditch your current DirecTiVo, you'll get a HR-20 directv DVR which sucks, but hey... it's something... and it can get the new MPEG-4 HD channels.tivo series3 and tivoHD will NOT work with satellite.and yeah, i read that engadget article - i can get the S3 for around $100 extra, so i can completely justify it... but they're right on... MSRP for the S3 is $800... wtf?also the SDV adapter will be made available through your cable company, so you'd be safe getting a tivo now. they are indeed going to make one available - the question is WHEN. luckily not much is SDV (yet...) in cary/raleigh.

^ - If you get the series 3 keep us informed on how the install goes. I was curious about what exactly IS on SDV yet in our area and found this.

1/10/2008 8:55:10 PM
I just got the Tivo HD and plan to get a 500 gig hard drive for it eventually but I don't see the big deal with the series 3 over the HD except for more hard drive space. I got a lifetime subscription too so i plan to keep this box for a while.
1/12/2008 9:24:05 AM
series3 = better remote and OLED display on the frontplus it's THX certified
1/12/2008 12:48:11 PM
GUESS WHAT CAME YESTERDAY!!!!!!!111!!!!!11
1/16/2008 10:47:43 AM
will tivo work with suddenlink?the SA 8300HD kind of sucks balls
1/16/2008 10:52:33 AM
that's a mighty old dell over there.what do you use it for?
1/16/2008 10:53:58 AM
does this thing have the horsepower to stream h264 from your desktop? I'd buy one and pay for lifetime service if it could and I could update the codecs
1/16/2008 11:51:54 AM
^^tis my router/wireless AP^it has the horsepower, but you can't natively edit the codecs, and it won't stream, only download from desktops
1/16/2008 11:58:26 AM
you should mod that bitch to high hellor at least paint it black and/or hide it.
1/16/2008 12:08:29 PM
yeah, i need to stick it in a new casei have a small shuttle box i could have used but it only has 1 pci slot and i have 3 PCI NICs and a PCI wifi card it was hidden, i just didn't have another place to put it
1/16/2008 12:16:22 PM
where are the pictures of this "home theater thing" you speak of?
1/16/2008 12:17:56 PM
ah ok, I was almost having buyers remorse about buying this apple tv to hack. I'll probably buy a tivo hd or series3 eventually, especially if the esata works as easily as it does on the SA8300HD
1/16/2008 12:23:09 PM
im thinking about a tivomy porn would look much better on the TV.
1/16/2008 12:24:18 PM
esata is a breezepower down box, unplug it, plug in esata drive, plug tivo in, hold down pause button, until the tivo logo comes up, hit 62 on the remote, wait a few minutes, voila"your second drive is now ready for use."
1/16/2008 12:24:36 PM
if you get a tivoplz put my email in the box where it asks for the person that referred youe.k@ncsu.edu
1/16/2008 12:25:14 PM
how's the UI in contrast to a standard suddenlink DVR?
1/16/2008 12:27:26 PM
rofllllllthere's no comparisontivo is the end all be all of DVR UIsi've had a tivo in some shape or form (series1/2/3) for almost 6 years now if that tells you anythingi had a SA8300 dvr for all of a week before i said "fuck that" and went back to tivohttp://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=tivo+interface&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2]
1/16/2008 12:30:25 PM
so you buy the box and pay $15 to tivoor you lease the box and pay $20 to suddenlinkam i getting this right?
1/16/2008 12:31:31 PM
i didn't think suddenlink had tivo boxesbut tivo service is $12.95/monthyou buy the box, you own it, you just have to pay for service
1/16/2008 12:35:22 PM
yeah, i meant suddenlink's DVR boxi'll be looking into this.any deals out there?
1/16/2008 12:38:14 PM
the series3 is $799 MSRPyou can find one for around $579 shipped, and if you order before jan. 26th, there's a $200 rebate, bringing the price to $379, which is a damn good dealyou can get a tivoHD for around $269if you don't care about HD or digital via cablecards, you can get a series2 dual tuner for next to nothing, even free if you time it right.
1/16/2008 12:39:56 PM
i already have the suddenlink DVRi love itbut i dont know about the grass on the other side.
1/16/2008 12:43:58 PM
$380 at buy.com with google discount:http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=203305032
1/16/2008 2:54:12 PM
is the 8300HD the only one suddenlink offers?btw what do you pay per month granite if you don't mind my asking, i think our shit is 120ish for HD/DVR/HBO/8mbitSo you buy a tivo HD and get a cable card for it via your provider to bypass the shit receivers?[Edited on January 16, 2008 at 8:21 PM. Reason : .]
1/16/2008 8:19:53 PM
the only thing I don't like about the Series3 boxes is that they take FOREVER to boot. If you have trouble getting the CableCARD stuff to work, you are going to hate your life whenever you reboot the thing. You would think that they could make the thing take less than 15 minutes to load up.
1/16/2008 11:04:51 PM
Congrats Evan - are you going the cablecard route or no?
