The officer told the man he was a police officer, but the suspect apparently didn't drop the gun. The officer then fired twice, striking the would-be thief, later identified as Zarate, in the leg. He survived the injury but remained hospitalized at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center on Tuesday night. Zarate, of the 5100 block of West Schubert, was charged with three counts of attempted armed robbery and one count of aggravated assault to a police officer, the latter for allegedly pointing a gun at the officer, said the Cook County state's attorney's office.
