1/3/2008 6:33:38 PM

http://www.newsobserver.com/734/story/860112.htmlHeeding call of the roadBlue Hose visit Pack on SaturdayChip Alexander, Staff WriterForgive Gregg Nibert if he feels like one of the road-weary presidential hopefuls.Since early November, Nibert has crisscrossed the country. He has been in Ohio, New Mexico, Nebraska, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, New York, North Carolina and California. But Nibert isn't selling himself. He is promoting Presbyterian College basketball. The Blue Hose are in their first season of NCAA Division I competition and Nibert, in his 19th year as men's coach, decided to take on all comers."We wanted to dive right into Division I," he said Thursday. The Blue Hose are 1-17 after a 70-58 loss Wednesday at Wake Forest -- Presbyterian's 17th road game. On Saturday, the Blue Hose will play at N.C. State, then will hop a flight to Atlanta for a game against Georgia Tech on Sunday.Three ACC teams in five days. That's some heavy lifting.Include Clemson, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Georgia, Auburn ..."We'd hear bits and pieces last year of what teams we might be playing," senior guard Pat Kiscaden said. "When we finally got the full schedule in the summer, It was like, 'Oh, my goodness.'"It's a big jump for us, but it has been fun."By season's end, the Blue Hose will have traveled 130,000 miles. But Nibert isn't looking for sympathy. What he wants is recognition -- and quality recruits."We want to let people know Presbyterian is Division I and we are playing the best competition," Nibert said.Nibert said this year's schedule helped attract three freshmen who are starters and two others who are redshirting this season. The Blue Hose, he said, have three players signed for next season."It's the best back-to-back classes we've ever had," he said. The string of road games will be lucrative. Nibert said Presbyterian, located in Clinton, S.C., will receive about $650,000 for the athletics department."Part of that will help us get to 13 scholarships," he said. "We're at 11 now. And we can fix up our locker room and do other things to make it look first class."The Blue Hose's only victory was in their only home game, on Dec. 1. Presbyterian topped Radford 62-60 at the Templeton Center."We've been an elite Division II program and it has been different not winning," Kiscaden said. "We're not competing for a championship this season, but every game has felt like a championship game. If we could beat an ACC team, it might be bigger than any championship I've ever won."The Blue Hose, who have just five home games, couldn't beat Wake Forest. But after falling behind 22-6, Presbyterian trailed the Demon Deacons just 31-29 at halftime, and the score was tied with less than 10 minutes left.Center Al'Lonzo Coleman, a 6-foot-7 freshman who scored 18 points in the 74-57 loss at Clemson, had 16 against Wake."When we played Clemson, it was a three-point game with seven minutes left," Nibert said. "And if you had told me before the season we'd be tied with Wake Forest with 9:56 to play, I'd have said I'm all for that."You'd like to win every game, but I'm proud of our players' character and work ethic. I'll give them an A-plus for their toughness and work ethic."Presbyterian, which has 1,200 students, has gotten the exposure it sought. The Blue Hose have been featured by The New York Times and ESPN.com."We're a small school from a small community, and we've definitely been the talk of the town," Kiscaden said. "Everyone knows what we're up against. But it's been good for the school to get our name out there."Next season should be more conventional. The Blue Hose join the Big South Conference, though they're not eligible for the Big South tournament or the NCAA Tournament until 2011-12.Nibert said Presbyterian could play at Duke in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. There also could be a few more marquee games."It has been quite an experience this year," Nibert said. And a lot of miles.
