100 identical wallets were "lost" on purpose to see what people would do if found. Each wallet contained 2.10 in real money, a fake $50 gift certificate, and a clearly written out identification card. The people that picked up the wallet were filmed. Purpose was to see who returned the wallet and who kept it. The study breaks down age, gender, and race. These pie charts can be found in the FAQ. Pretty interesting study if you're bored:http://www.wallettest.com/

How could you only take race and gender into account here? That isn't the way experiments work. Did they poll these people to see where they are from/ what race they are?Who's to say this "experiment" tests HONESTY and not HUNGER?These idiots who ran this "experiment" probably never finished highschool.

or maybe some people were fucking white and some people were fucking black. is it really that hard to understand? you act like they shouldn't have categorized them like that..but judging by the numbers they were probably right to. i'm not saying OH BLACK PPL STEAL blah blah blah, I'm just saying most stereotypes are there for a reason.

I noticed the FAQ's on the web page did not specifically address:Where exactly were a majority of the wallets placed? On the street? In a subway station? In the dressing room of Macy's? That would impact the sample. For example, if the wallets were left in mainly deserted allies- then one would be more likely to have homeless individuals pick up the wallet. Maybe they didn't have access to a phone. Maybe they would have reported it if they did. Perhaps leaving wallets in deserted allies encourages people of specific demographics to take part in the "study". If they left the wallets in a dressing room in Macy's they'd be more likely to attract the segment of population that shops at Macy's. Get it?Notice the sample size between genders- more whites than blacks tended to pick up the wallets. What do you all think accounts for that? I think this study is bogus all the way. It seems like something totally random someone did (he even admits this isn't a real study). The problem with these types of "tests" is that some people will read his web site and "statistics" and not be critical about what they are reading. Instead those people will jump to faulty and terribly based conclusions like...."White people are more honest than Black people"Anyway...just my two cents.

^ This is what I'm talking about. As it pertains to the "study" that this thread refers to it would be inappropriate to conclude that blacks commit more crime. Fine the DoJ says it- I'm guessing that they base that on numerous studies that have more merit than the one mentioned in this thread. However, to look at THIS specific study and say "Yup, just as I thought, blacks commit more crime" would be incorrect. Also 100 people CAN make a sample size for some studies. In this particular one, 100 in one town is problematic. Could we take the results of this study and replicate it in let's say Iowa and get similar results? NO. Can we/should we take the results and generalize it to the American population? NO. That's another reason why basing conclusions off of this study is inappropriate. Here's another thing...by saying that DoJ say that blacks commit more crime.....are you saying that picking up a stray wallet on the street is a crime? What happened to finders, keepers? Or have none of you done that before?[Edited on January 3, 2008 at 9:28 PM. Reason : j/b]
1/3/2008 9:25:13 PM
they did break the results down by age as well, young people kept the wallet more often ~ 50% honest , old people gave the wallet back more often ~70 % honest.

OMFG RACISM PAGING AL SHARPTON!!!nahh i do not see how anyone can honestly deny the inference that from the sample group that blacks were more likely to take the wallet. I do not think an experiment was needed to persuade people of that. Yeah it is most likely due to socio-economics and parenting but the fact remains. This is what people get confused. I do not think genetically being black has very much to do with a predisposition to steal or lie. It's the other factors that come into play on the nurture side that creates the difference. However, whenever someone tries to highlight that fact the offended party pulls out the race card.[Edited on January 3, 2008 at 10:31 PM. Reason : l]

i think this test is bullshit not bc i'm black but bc of the contents of the wallet. i've never stolen anything in my life but if i found a wallet with 2$(gift certificate is negligible since it looks fake as shit anyway) i probably wouldn't go through the trouble of returning the shit either, and it's not a real id it's his name written on a slip of paper. there are way too many factors here to even take this seriously. based on those same results i could say" white people are more likely to embezzle from their company so they don't have to take 2$ out of a wallet on the street"or "white people have more free time to track a guy down for 2$ bc they have better jobs that they got bc they weren't black and viewed as dishonest."[Edited on January 4, 2008 at 7:41 PM.
