yeah, seeing how the world is pretty much a level field when it comes to opportunities to eat food, live under a roof, and be treated for illness - I see why you would feel such a way.

No, he's not.

Not every recipient of charitable activities
- sits around waiting for it
- asks for it
- is worthless

I do object to the bank saying 'your bonus? Not yours at all'. Let them keep at least part of it, or have the BANK do the charitable activity. I understand they're trying to let the employees choose the beneficiary, but don't give the money away under the pretense of it being a christmas bonus for employees

Maybe the bank should give bonuses and also donate money if they want to donate money

if you're not guaranteed a bonus as part of your base salary

is it really ever yours?

I shouldn't have to pay because other people can't. It's my choice, if i want to help, I will. This is America, where you make your life your own. Too much "charity" and government program money goes to assholes that are too lazy to work. If I want to keep my bonus/pay check, it should be my choice

that's why charities are funded by VOLUNTEER DONORS, NOT FORCED DONORS.

It's kind of weird to force them to spend time on a project like this and not have them get anything (other than the sense of self-fulfillment yadda yadda) out of it.

There are exceptions to everything, but 90% is still a good enough reason to get to keep ur bonus

It's their choice whether or not to even GIVE you a bonus. It's a BONUS. You should be glad they give you the opportunity to pick the charity of your choice, rather than that money going to something you wouldn't want to support.

You're saying that recipients of charity don't deserve to be helped because someone's BOSS won't let them keep their bonus

^^90%?

I'd love to see your source on that.

They should make it optional with some kind of incentive like matching people's gifts. They don't know what kind of budget the employees might be on. Some people might've been counting on the bonus to handle some bills. I'm all for charity, but don't take (basically) money out of someone else's pocket to give to others.

No, many people that are recipients of charity money are deserving, but it should be a person's right to choose whether or not/when and where to donate money.

^^^he is right, there are worthless shits that sit around collecting money, thus it should be a person's choice to donate. I don't donate a lot of money to any charity for this reason. On the other hand, I donate toys, donate items to goodwill, donate blood, volunteer work, etc.

[Edited on December 18, 2007 at 11:05 AM. Reason : ^]

and while some of these donations may still go to worthless shits, it was my choice to donate, and it isn't hurting me in any way, unlike stealing my paycheck or bonuses

i am always amused at the general split of threads like this:

group A: i dunno...i worked for this money, i earned it fair and square, and i want to spend it on a mortgage payment and christmas presents for my children
group B: omg think of the poor man, emotion man, the poor are more important than you man, dude

charity is why human overpopulation will occur. case in point, population can't generate enough food one year due to natural cycling of their country, population goes hungry, people give aid till the environment swings back, the population increases during good years until the next obvious swing, again people help, but have to put in even more b/c they helped the first time so there are simply more people starving than there were before. repeat a few times and soon one population is totally supporting another.... until the one being supported decides they would like the supporters land/stuff goes to war and takes it...

natural patterns of population control are usually a little better, even among humans....

(i'm not referring to once in a 100 year events, more like once every 10-20 years (dry seasons))

That's not what he said.

He said he needs the money more than some unnamed person, who he has deemed worthless.
Nothing about consent.

What came to mind for me, that even prompted a reply, was a charity I worked with where all cash went to taking cares of horses. It was a rehabilitative equestrian program in north raleigh for children with things like CP whose families couldn't afford the expensive programs. Yeah, the horses and kids are totally worthless, alright.

I typically donate time because I'm time-rich and money-poor, and because I'm more concerned about the %ages of donations that people actually see, and how much disappears into 'administrative costs'.

[Edited on December 18, 2007 at 11:10 AM. Reason : PS: donating platelets is more appreciated than donating blood. do platelets, if you can.]

maybe he does need it more than them. if he has to pay off bills, then he needs it. no sense in him being forced to lower his quality of life, which creates more problems.

I tried donating platelets a few times, they said no

yes I need the money that I work for. If those poor people want money, they can either get it from the mandatory donations I give already through taxes, or they can get a job.

The whole thing is a little iffy, but that just smacks of "we're going to collect the footage and use it for the tons of PR goodwill it will get us!!!" I would just send in a donation to somewhere worthy and tape myself putting the check in the envelope and dropping it in a mailbox, or handing the sealed envelope to someone. Screw that "be sure to tape the reaction of the poor souls you're helping..."

its a PR scam for the bank and instead of rewarding someone who has worked all year with some extra money to help pay some bills and help little Sally have a merry christmas, they are going to reward someone who hasnt worked all year...its sad that peoples emotions get the best of them so much that they dont see this for what it is

if the bank wants to donate money, great...but it is silly to give someone money and require them to do something specific with it. just eliminate the middle man.

its like forcing morality on someone. i will give when i choose to give.

i can see this sucking, but

socialism? a private company being allowed to make decisions for itself without government interaction is socialism? wtf are you even talking about? the government stepping in and making them allow the employees to keep the bonuses is socialism, if you even stop to think about what you're saying.

this is terrible. These people worked for that money, and the bonus should go to them to spend on their family. It's not their bonus if they can't spend it how they like.

while i'd be upset about losing my bonus, you could use it as a tax write off, and you would be doing something to help another (in the true christmas spirit)

what makes it worse is that they decided to do this AFTER they had been giving bonuses in the past.

i know you shouldn't expect a bonus, but a lot of people consider it a part of their salary.
