When I'm broke, and haven't figured anything out, I enlarge and frame one of my pictures for them. For my aunts and uncles, it'd be a picture of their kid(s). For my grandfather, either landscape, or (these, I don't enlarge, but just give him a set of two or three) pictures of my bf and I.You probably don't have the frames and images on hand, but that's my $0.02

cook them a nice dinner. i did this for my family last year. i don't get to see them all that often since i live 9 hours away from them, so the time we spend together now as a family means more then any object. i brought down some uncooked crabcakes, some nice wine, and made a real nice dinner for them including appetizers and dessert. i spent a decent amount of money on it (especially with the wine), but you can easily cook a nice dinner for 5 under $100.[Edited on December 18, 2007 at 9:11 AM. Just get some books or DVDs. Get a season of their favorite show on DVD.

we draw names in the family for my sisters and bro and there spouses or significant others. Also, when the grandkids get 18 there names get included. Makes it easier and you dont feel like you have to buy everyone something because that gets expensive. We have been doing that for awhile now and it seems to be working well. Everyone, of course, buys the parents something and the niece and nephews until they turn 18 and then they are included in the name drawing.

This is what my parents are getting: tea and cookie gift basket. Big Lots is your frienda couple boxes of teaa couple boxes of cookiesa chocolate bar or twosome hot cocoa. If you are really ambitious, some nuts and a basket to put it all in plus some tissue paper. You spent about $15, similar gift basket would be in the $30 to $40 range. If you are REALLY ambitious, a loaf of home made bread will impress them. For my little brother, I went to Grand Asia and got some ramen type noodles (pho, etc.), chop sticks, and almond cookies. Also cheap, but he really likes noodles.

^yep, that's a great way to incorporate Mom and Dad into one present. You can also do it with a baguette, grapes, cheese, and a bottle of wine. That's what I did for the bf's parents and they loved it.

Monogrammed towels. Might sound strange, but Ralph Lauren outlet in Smithfield has good prices on nice bath towels... if you can get a friend with an embroidery machine with monogram card... you're in biz!My dad got navy with silver monogram, mom got a sage color with cream monogram, and sister got lime and hot pink.... all loved them. Younger sister had the BEST towels on her hall fresh year ;-)[Edited on December 20, 2007 at 12:08 AM. Reason : ...]

I can assure you that no male is going to give a flying fuck about having the nicest towels on the hall.

My mom monogrammed all my towels and sheets freshman year. They didn't get stolen out of the dryer, and I never forgot what my name was. Just don't get them white ones that'll look nasty, because you KNOW no college student ever uses bleach.

look at barnes and noble and borders. in that section right when you walk in the door where they have lots of clearance items? i found some interesting stuff there. some really cool cookbooks. they were only $7, but they are the kind of book that USED to be like $30 and looks really expensive regardless. lots of photography books and stuff. and little kit things...like cute recipe organizers and stuff.

board games?? there are some fun adult board games (or board type games) and we were at target and walmart today and a bunch are on sale and clearance. otherwise you can get them for like $15 or $20. seems pretty cheap to me. catch phrase and stuff can be fun
12/23/2007 9:47:24 PM
Seriously, B&N's is a brilliant idea. Between the gift, clearance, and games section you can take care of pretty much anyone all in a single stop.
