Oh goodie. Personally, I put Picard at the top of the list, just because he got the fewest members of his crew KILLED. Sure, there were lots of deaths on TNG that were due to unrelated drama, but never due to Picard thrusting them into danger, like Kirk. The many diplomatic functions that Picard had to handle made him far more competent and versatile than Kirk. (For fuck's sake, he was the ONLY one who could successfully stand his ground diplomatically against the Klingons and make it out alive.)Next is obviously Sisko. Possibly Picard is the only other captain who could have been able to handle the many captain and diplomatic decisions that were thrown at Sisko on a daily basis. No WAY anyone else could have handled the Dominion nearly as well as Sisko did. (Plus, when the omniscient trickster being who can and does threaten to off all of humanity on a regular basis showed up on his ship, Sisko did the right thing and punched him in the face, instead of giving him positive reinforcement by paying attention to him.)Then Kirk makes the list. Kirk represents a flawed, slighly xenophobic time in Federation history, where everyone was the enemy. Kirk's kick-in-the-door attitude won him commendations and prestige in his day, but would not have lasted in the TNG or DS9 era of Starfleet. Still, his impressive military victories can't be denied, and he goes down as one of the greats, too.And Janeway just sucks. The series sucked, the captain sucked, the crew sucked, the villains sucked. Janeway was not a sympathetic character, she was too cold. Picard, Sisko, and Kirk showed a LOT of concern for their crews, and I just never felt that from Janeway. She came off as more of an obsessed Captain Ahab-type character, rather than actually working for her crew. And then Seven of Nine shows up, who ruined the show like any Mary Sue usually ruins fiction.

tell me about it...anyway, anyone who puts picard on the bottom of the list is out of their mind.the top of the list is very arguable as kirk, picard, and sisko had many different situations to deal with...janeway and archer just sucked.

picard>janeway>sisko>kirk kirk > picard >= sisko >>> janewayTOS is king of them all. Hail to the fucking-green-skinned-alien-babes-left-and-right king, baby.TNG had its high and low points, but overall was good.DS9 tended to be slow, but was at its peak when it dealt with the Klingon civil wars and Dominion war. It also gets lots of points for being the darkest of the TNG-era shows, allowing us to see that the utopian Federation isn't as perfect as they make themselves out to be (but much like TNG, it still suffered from its portrayal of the human race as having the sun shine out of their collective asses). Also had some of the most colorful and compelling characters out of all the series (eg Garak).Voyager was just plain fucking terrible. The acting wasn't all that great, but I don't really blame the actors so much as the shitty material they were constantly supplied. Janeway was fucking bipolar, deciding one episode to throw the Prime Directive out the airlock and then religiously adhering to it the next. Lots of the premises were either recycled and regurgitated from the other series (pretty much any transporter or holodeck malfunction episode), full of uncreative cliches, or just plain stupid (the greatest offender of them all being Threshold, which irreversibly showed that Trek writers have no clue as to how evolution works. And that's just the smallest problem of that episode). The producers knew that they were losing their audience, so pretty much every other episode was a completely obvious attempt at drawing in more viewers (their trump card naturally being the inclusion of Seven "Huge Tits" of Nine). As much as I enjoyed Robert Picardo, you know something's wrong when a holographic doctor is the most interesting thing that a series has to offer.I can't really comment a whole lot on Enterprise, since I never watched most of it. It mainly suffered from pissing on established continuity because it wanted to be the first to do everything and get it right instead of letting the familiar Trek cultures and technology come later in a more natural way. When they abandoned the Temporal Cold War arc without any sort of conclusion to focus on the Xindi arc (which felt like they were making up on the fly as they wrote each episode), I started to tune out. I hear it got a hell of a lot better during the fourth season and even managed to correct some of the glaring continuity errors, but by then they had no viewers left and the funding finally dried up completely.[Edited on December 21, 2007 at 5:16 PM.
