I'm not there yet, but I should be I've taken on all the finances that were previously shared and I'll have no furniture. I'm sure you guys have some ways of cutting corners when you're financially challenged.

INCLUDE ANY POINTERS OR INSTANCES OF BEING BROKE IN THIS THREAD. GOOD IDEA TO EXPLAIN HOW YOU OVERCAME IT ALSO (IF YOU EVER DID OVERCOME IT).

if I got a roommate it wouldn't be so bad, but I have to clean this place and clear out alot of stuff before being appealing to a roommate.

I still have no job and I'm having to borrow from my parents every month.

I admittedly could be a whole lot worse off, but unless I want to spend the rest of my life paying the parents back, I have to make cuts here and there.

you want to know how to conserve money when you're poor, here goes...

eat once a day
don't smoke cigs
don't drink
don't smoke weed
don't date
don't pay for cable
conserve electricity
drive sparingly
buy in bulk
buy generic
don't use your a/c

eat once a day, don't date, don't pay for cable and don't use your A/C is out of the question. so is buying generic. Charmin's is fucking superious. So is Brawney and Tide 2X Concentrate.

what really makes me think amsterdam is an alias is that in some posts 'he' uses all caps and correct punctuation, and in others he has has shitty punctuation and no caps. for christ sakes so stop posting these apparently very thoughtful and dramatic posts.

this drama was given to me by God to make me a better person. he places no burden on us that we can't handle. i'm trying to get through this. i'm even looking on CL for furniture now.

I did that about 4 years ago, when i finally had some money and put some in another mutual fund...then this past year got a perm position and now I have the 401k.

I try always to have a certain amount in my "rainy day" fund for unexpected expenses such a car problems, breaking a lease(had both of them the past year)

i'm preparing for life w/out the luxuries. since my ex-gf is moving out I'm gonig to be stuck with $1000 more a month to pay for EVERY "FUCKING" THING. and some luxuries that i could afford. like we had a maid that was $80/week for twice a week cleaning, and changing the cat litter boxes and folding laundry, etc. now that she's gone and taking all the furniture i'm in a fucking bind.

^It's a German grocery store chain, although they have a store in north Raleigh. They only take cash (no checks or debit cards or anything like that), and it's basically all store-brand stuff, but their prices are mad cheap compared to everyone else.

it sounds less like you really want to conserve money by cutting luxuries and more like you're looking for someone with an easy solution to fix it. If u are really hard up, move to somewhere cheaper, dont drink alcohol or buy soda, cut out smoking (weed esp) and eat cheaper (i.e. ramen) It's easy to blow $$$ per month on food, esp. if you eat out. Dont go out in general so much, if you're gonna have cable then spend more of your time doing that. Start keeping a budget where you track your expenses and cut whatever is showing up as a big expense b/c it's different for everyone.

I realize not all of this is feasible for every person, but in general anyone can get by on a decent job if they discipline themselves and dont impulse buy

It's hard to get worked up over threads when they are horribly and terribly false.

RAMEN!
don't eat fast food. what a waste.
drive only when needed.
the cheapest place to get groceries (and everything else) is the super wal-marts.
and yes, generic saves a lot of money but I understand the whole paper towel/toilet paper thing. I don't ever buy generic TP/Paper towels. and trash bags. but as far as everything else goes, you can deal with generic. but yeah just make your own food mostly and try not to drive everywhere. also...it's pretty cold here and although my roomies never use the heater, it's still bearable esp. since I know we're saving money. just wear warm clothes. it's harder to get cool than it is to get warm anyway.
