Only 2 colors are totally acceptable regardless of suit style of color: White and light blue., If you're unsure just go with a solid white or light blue shirt. As for the tie, it's somewhat dependent on the size and spacing of the pinstripes, but polka dots are generally a safe bet with pinstripes.

ShouldCould be a transition between the shirt and the suit. So I'd go for a highly patterned tie that has majority dark gray/black and some of the color you're choosing. A lot of times if you have a good collection I'd just put it on and see how it looks. You've also got a girl handy, use her.A lot of times you'd be surprised how well various colors work together. Black suit, med to dark blue shirt, yellow-gold tie.[Edited on December 8, 2007 at 4:20 AM. Reason : hrmmm]

^ blue is always gonna be a great choice, and looks elegant.after blue, pink was the new it color for dress shirts, esp with suits.after pink, now it is purple.blue says "class, elegance, etc"pink/purple say "hip, young, etc"

pink/purple say i'm willing to look gay to get laidfunky greens/ oranges say young / hip

well, to each his own.i can't see myself wearing a funky green/orange dress shirt with a formal suit. neither can i see anybody else wearing one.when it comes to dress shirts to be worn with suits, purple and pink are as funky as it gets. perhaps red/burgundy as well. anything funkier would become non-formal. we are talking about dress shirts here, not polo shirts or t-shirts.[Edited on December 8, 2007 at 4:49 PM. Reason : p.s. i don't need to look gay to get laid... i am gonna wear that at my wedding ]

pin stripe + solid color shirt. Dont want to mix patterns especially with suits. Tie would probably look better with a pattern so it stands out but not too loud. Tie could also have a color from the shirt.

It really depends on how fashion-forward you want to look.If you want to keep it safe, yes, a solid shirt is gonna be your best bet. But, in the long run, you could do a subtle stripe on the shirt. I think with a pinstripe shirt, you could do almost any of the color choices you listed, but the darker blues and burgundies may be a bit too dark. Lighter colors (purple, blue, pink if you want, etc) will be a nice pop of color. You can definitely do a pattern on the tie!!! Don't be so boring. Your color scheme and choices you posted further down sound good, IMO.]
