I have a laptop and every so often the monitor just goes black. the pc is still on however. The only way I have figured out how to get it back on is to close my screen and open it back up. Is my monitor just bad or is it a different problem? Also if the problem isn't easily corrected are there any good pc repair places that would be recommended

I have my power management settings at never to do anything when plugged in. If it is on battery then after 25 min standby and 45 min shutdown. I haven't had it on battery since the monitor has been blacking out.

You're probably looking at a failing LCD Power Inverter ... what type of laptop do you have?

I have a Dell Inspiron

The same is happening to me on occasion with my ViewSonic [LCD]monitor. It just goes black randomly and when I turn it back on it goes black again after 3-5 seconds.I then repeat this ritual 5-10 times and magically the screen stays on.Any reason as to the cause?[Edited on December 6, 2007 at 1:14 PM. Reason : lcd]

Like the duderino said, failing LCD power inverter (which keeps the backlight lit up proper).Or you could have a laptop like mine where the power plug for the power inverter pulls itself out over time if you open and close the screen a lot.I fixed that by disassembling it and plugging the thing back in proper. This fix isn't going to be cheap if your computer is out of warranty.

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?satitle=inspiron+lcd+inverterWell that's a start, and I could also point you to the documentation for how to replace it yourself if you'd mention the model you have. It's kinda like if I asked what type of car you had and you told me "Ford".

It is a 1100 model. I wouldn't be comfortable installing it myself but once I got one would be willing to pay someone to install the new inverter
