It's hilarious seeing those talking heads ranting about how terrible European health care systems are.

That's not funny. Conditions in US prisons are horrible. It's a serious breach of human rights that endangers us all.

Remember when everyone said the treatment of Iraq prisoners wasn't the the America they knew?

They didn't know America. That's things rolls in American prisons.

Yeah it's nice when you discover massive oil reserves right off the coast of your sparsely populated country, then your government taxes the hell out of it.

Either that or simply subsidizes it.

There's no way that the Norwegian system would work in any country besides Norway, and perhaps some middle eastern countries if the oil tycoons there didn't keep it all for themselves.

^ That's partially true, but not completely. We have plenty of resources here in the US. It's a matter of using them for the good the people. Ideally, this would be done without a government.

yes, the us could become like this, if we were at ethnically, racially, and culturally as monotone as Norway. The crime is low b/c the poor and others get most of what they need / want from the government, as well as the monotony I stated above. I for one do not have the mindset that the government knows best how to spend the majority of my earned income. The tax rate of Norway is very high, 44+ %. http://www.heritage.org/research/features/index/country.cfm?id=Norway
index of economic freedom.

US - #4
Norway - #30

That doesn't necessarily explain why US prisons are horrific while Norwegian prisons are fairly benign. Would treating criminals decently destroy economic freedom?

Norway also has the advantage of vast oil wealth disproportionate to its population, wealth that the government largely took and wisely invested in social programs and the like.

Sure it does. If we had some of the advantages Norway does, we'd have a much lower crime rate, which would mean much emptier prisons at the very least, and probably generally better treatment. Now, at the same time, part of the American psyche involves not molly-coddling prisoners, so they'd still probably be somewhat worse, but there would be less disparity.

I don't completely buy that explanation. Prisons create high crime rates as much as high crime rates create prisons. What better way to encourage crime than by throwing minor criminals together with hardened thugs. After the abuse and absorption of violent prison culture, the minor criminal then returns to society, now ostracized for his record. He's been trained in crime. Gotten tips from experts in the field. He's mentally scarred and furious about he went through. What do you think will end up happening to him?

I'm glad our sports teams have the name of the team on the jersey, rather than the name of the sponsor.

And don't bother posting anything about nascar, racing sucks anyway.

I lived in both England and France. Their health care systems do suck.

Socialized medicine in this country will be disastrous.

BTW, Moore's Sicko is full of misconceptions and convenient exclusions (Particularly in regards to Canada's health care system). The man is as full of shit as an O'Reilly or Limbaugh .

He left out the part where they go around raping each other at a higher rate than in the US.
