If you sell a vehicle and the taxes are not paid will the DMV still let the new owner register it?

yes, worked for me a couple times.

the more confusing issue for me is the sales tax associated with selling a vehicle.

in a private transaction in NC the buyer pays the sales tax when they go to register the vehicle. I didn't think there was any tax on the seller?

i'm confused at what you guys are trying to say?

how often do you pay these taxes? The guy I purchased the car from said that it was included, now I have a bill from the DMV for about 300 dollarbux.

^^just read that post. wtf though I bought the car in july. Why should I already be paying taxes again (if in fact, it is annual)

dont hold me to this- but when you buy and initially register the car, you pay a one time "highway use tax" based on the value of the car, along with the title, tag and notary fees.... it is similar to sales tax
that is separate and unrelated to the annual property tax collected by the county- which generally gets billed a few months after purchase

Pretty much my registration is fucked 5 ways. My license plates are revoked because of a 1 week insurance lapse that I did not send the paperwork in in time so the plates are revoked for 30 days. Then there is the property tax hold on the registration for the unpaid tax bill of 96.00.

The tax bill says the value of the vehicle is $6910.00 there are some just like mine on craigslist for about $2500.

Would I have to pay taxes if I "gave" the car to my girlfriend and transferred the title in to her name?

I think either I am gonna have to do that or turn the plates in for 30 days. I think there might be a way around that by going to a hearing or something but have no clue what the procedure is.

property tax is property tax dude. and you have to maintain insurance coverage to register a vehicle.

and your truck is worth about $1500. the $2500 ones dont need $1000 of work just to have working heat

I like how they say if you wanna dispute the value you have to do it 30 days after the bill is due just to weed out fuckers like me.

Quote :
"Value adjustments may be necessary if the owner can document high mileage, significant body or frame damage, excessively worn interior or other damage that may significantly reduce the retail value. Normal wear and tear will not be considered.

Documentation that will be considered for a vehicle value appeal:

* A copy of the bill of sale documenting the purchase price from a local dealer.
* A written appraisal performed by a dealer that clearly states the appraisal reflects the retail value as of the January 1 of the year in which the taxes are due.
* Pictures of the vehicle documenting its condition.
* For vehicles less than eight years old, documentation of high mileage from an annual inspection, oil change or other invoice.
* Repair estimates for vehicles that have been significantly damaged"

so you are pissed because you have been a fucking slack-ass?

And no, selling the vehicle will not get you out of the taxes. You will just get tax collectors hounding your ass for years to collect on it.

And with the insurance lapse, all you had to do was request a hearing. I did it, because my insurance renewed during a move and I wasnt on auto-bill as I thought. Had my hearing at the DMV, paid the 50 dollar fine and everything was kosher.
