Tolls on an interstate is really the worst idea imaginable.

Well you can either have no new roads or you can have toll roads, because the DOT is not going to be building much for the next couple of years.

you obviously have not contemplated 540 with STOPPING POINTS during rush hour.

no new roads might be good though - stem the flow of FUCKING YANKEES moving down here.

I thought the news release said that they would be moving tolls.

Plus, do you want your taxes going up for a road you don't use?

So if you use it then your argument would be that you don't want to pay for it but would rather everyone share the brunt of the cost?

Didn't say I was for the toll or against it - just want to see what everyone else thinks.

^ exactly... it will have the option for a quick pass where you wont even have to slow down... think of it as a tax that you only have to pay if you use the service... and you shouldn't be living that fucking far out to begin with so poop on you

if its about costs, the first thing they need to do is fire some of the dead weight...i bet at least 50% of the employees in the DOT (much like any other government bureaucracy) are either redundant or doing jack shit

The tolls are most likely going to be all electronic either you will have a transponder in your car or they will use video to capture license plate and send you a bill. It will cost you more if you don't have the transponder so they are hoping that will persuade people to get them.

The tolls on I-540 would only be on the part that has not been constructed yet. The Toll Authority may hope that they can put tolls on all of I-540 but it would be almost impossible to get tolls placed on the existing parts of I-540. The only way I see them getting the all of I-540 tolled is if they were to lease I-540 from the state.

I'd rather see a more radical plan of action. Start spending money wisely. No wait, the current system of throwing more money at people who can't manage what they already have is working so well for the state.

Sorry, not buying it. If you want to argue this way then you can put up a toll on every road in the state and eliminate the gas tax. I paid for countless roads in the mountains and around the beach that I'll never use, so it seems like it's their turn now.

^^ The DOT doesn't have enough money in the budget to build all the new facilities it wants or needs.

^ it would not stop traffic you would just drive through like you normally do.

Well the latest proposal is that there will be no booth to stop at. People with EZPass will get billed, people without will get a picture of their license plate taken and will receive a bill in the mail.

Seems to me that the bureaucratic costs associated with taking pictures of people's license plates, sending them bills, and making sure they will pay them will cut into the profits something fierce.

I never plan on driving that stretch, I just know that if they get their way on this then that will just open the flood gates to tolls all over NC. That and you know that they won't take the toll down, even long after they have every road in the state paid for 20 times over.

Also, what makes you people in the "only the people that use it pay for it" camp think that the toll money will only go toward the construction of the road they are driving on? I mean they just raided the highway trust fund for other projects. You trust them all of a sudden? Put the toll road up. It will be paying for the latest non 540 pork barrel project before it even collects its first dime.

They are going to pass that cost on to the people they mail the charge to. So say its $1 with the transponder it might be $5 to get it through the mail. That way it encourages people to get a transponder.

The tolls are not going to be handled by the DOT. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority is who is going to be building and in charge of the toll roads.

If you don't want tolls on 540, you aren't going to see a new section of 540 until 2020. If you do support them, you'll see a new section by 2010. There is no money in the budget until 2020 otherwise. If you use the roads, pay the tolls.

Tolling would only take place on new sections of 540. Tolls usually mean better quality transportation as there is money to constantly maintain the roads. Once 540 is paid for by the tolls, I have heard they will most likely remove them.

We wouldn't have to have this problem in the first place if so many people didn't move all the way outside the beltline and contribute to sprawl.

thats what im talking about, the YANKEES are a disease
they come down here in herds, overpopulate, try to build all kinds of crap, then say we need to raise more taxes to build these things
and to get taxes we need more people to move here

its a viscious cycle that leads to the same dirty, crime ridden, low quality of life city that they ran away from to get here.

i say get rid of the YANKEES, get rid of our problems!

^^ Well generally the time it takes to pay off a road from tolls is really long. What usually happens is a group of investors will say we will build this road and we will charge X amount for X years and anything they make after paying for construction they keep. After X number of years the road goes to the state.

there has to be money to maintain the tolled facility as well. This cost will come from the tolls. Where do you propose this money to come from after the tolls are removed? DOT is already in a budget crunch. The tolls will probably stick around for a long time.

I actually know a fair amount about DOT, NCTA, and some of the toll projects.

^^ Your argument is a legitimate one, but whether or not they use tolls on the new section of 540 there will always be that problem. Somewhere your taxes will increase. You can't have it both ways.

We can either have tolls pay the cost, or you will not see any further construction to add length to 540 until around 2020. By that point with people continually moving outside the beltline and commuting into the city to work, traffic will be more of a nightmare.

There is not money in the budget to pay for a non-tolled interstate.

I'm paying for roads in another state.

well, it would be just as fair for people from other states passing though here to pay for roads in OUR state.

NC has one of the HIGHEST gas taxes in the nation... we SHOULDN'T need to add toll roads in the first place. Our leaders need to be more responsible with their spending.

But the states that toll 95 have extensive bridges and connectors and such. (well, maybe not delaware) 95 in NC is just a stretch of road. I dunno, it just seems like that's not the solution.

I really don't care one way or the other about the tolls on I-540. I can see both sides and am not very informed on the legal issues about it. I just get pissed off when people try to blame everything on "OMG the yankees are coming".
