except for me... how long would the power stay on? In other words, how much of the power grid is automatic and how much requires human interaction?

About 7 days according to http://www.worldwithoutus.com/did_you_know.html

After 7 days the supply of fuel to the diesel generators that circulate water to cool nuclear cores runs out.

Don't know about other power plants - probably the same type of situation though where some component shuts down after a week which sends stuff all to crap.

life would be pretty sweet if the power grid continued to work (and my gf was still around). I'd probably go pimp out a N. Raleigh mansion for a while before driving to New York to bust into a penthouse luxury condo.

You could siphon gas out of any car that you find.

Or you could just learn to hotwire and pick up a new car whenever yours ran out.

of course most of them would wreck very quickly

So if you think everyone on earth has dissapeared except you - do you spend your life adapting and living with nature or searching to try and find someone else who still exists? Or do you just jump off of a cliff?

id play augusta (quick, while the grass was still good and mowed), a couple other great courses, then go steal a kickass boat and cruise for awhile.

Id have to go north a lot to stock up on ice cause when the power goes out, there won't be any cold beer (ftl)

Id probably be ok with it for the first year or so, then id get super bored

oh, id probably get a small farm going so i could eat meat too. id figure out some way to feed/breed the cows and hogs

without consistent power, life would kinda suck

You might be alright if you were on a power grid that included a wind farm or solar power.

wat?

you mean to think, and indeed say, that a nuclear power plant doesn't power its own coolant pumps? i mean, there is probably diesel back up but.... yeah man, think about just how much sense that makes.... wow.

if we learned anything from Jurrasic Park, it's that even if all the males in the world were to disappear, life would find a way to repopulate.

Pretty good book from what I hear. The author kills us off in the first two pages.

And yes he does answer the question about how long the power would stay on. It would not be long because the world's nuclear reactors despite their safety features would overheat and explode.

Interesting fact that the New York subways would flood because no one would be around to operate the pumps that pump out over a million gallons of water per day.

Most gas in tanks and storage would be unusable after about a year.
Most paved surfaces would be mountable only by 4wd after 2 years, unpassable by anything after 4.
Most nuke plants would auto-scram, but older ones and those in china/russia would meltdown.
Most humans left alive after a planet-wide catastrophe would quickly find ways to kill themselves (e.g. bust into a drug store and take what they thought was penicillan).
FEMA has several binders of plans on just such an event. If I'm the last dude on earth, I'm heading to the NC DEM office...

My knowledge of nuclear energy is not smarter than a 5th grader - but even after a scram wouldn't the decay heat be a problem?

The diesels at the nuke plants aren't to put power on the grid, they are to keep the core from coming out the bottom in the event that the plant loses offsite power
