What exactly constitutes a conviction? Do you have to be tried and found guilty by the court for the charge or are you also convicted if you plead to a lesser offense, such as a a felony reduced to a misdemeanor? Should you check yes and explain you will discuss this during the interview or argue semantics if they ever challenge your "no" response?

You plead guilty/not guilty/alford to each particular charge, not to a range. And yes, a conviction is once again the court saying you fucked up and done did something illegal. Just look yourself up in the records of where you did something.
