if it was purely for procreational purposes, and the males where too busy spreading their seed to be readily available, then having only 10 partners/year could be seen as being pretty selective.

Unless the woman is also trying to select for a male that will protect her offspring, so she'd pick one that wasnt spreading his seed as much.
