they probably drive them for the same reason you are wary of them

also they're supposedly safe cars...i mean cops drive them so they're safe right...except for that whole gas tank that could explode if they are rear-ended thing

the easiest way to tell a cop vs non cop crown vic with relative certainty is to look for a dealership "brand" sticker on the back

most if not all state or government owned vehicles are fleet purchased and they will not have such a sticker. this will not keep you from being paranoid if you run into a privately owned one with no dealership branding, but it will help you if you see one that is questionable to err on the side of caution.

What do you have against senior citizens?

I wish every cop car were a Crown Vic. I can usually tell if a Crown Vic is behind me because the headlights don't look like many other cars still on the road, with the amber part on the inside. It's nearly impossible to tell if a cop's behind you if he's driving an Impala or something else.

Thanks for calling my mom an asshole, ASSHOLE.

Nah, I see where you're coming from. Why would anyone drive one? They're big. They're comfortable. They're safe. They're relatively inexpensive for what you get. They're reasonably powerful.

Oh, and Twista, the gas tank exploding thing was proven to be caused in most cases by drilling through the trunk floor to install brackets/gun mounts/equipment holders/etc., and if the car is rear-ended *just so* the screws and/or bolts will puncture the gas tank. I won't say never, but *almost* never happens on Civilian vehicles. And there was a recall for the PI's to install some protection over the top of the gas tank, and the issue has been fixed on later models.

well, presumably, if you're doing the speed limit it really isn't a big deal if it's a cop or not, right?

Couldn't you also tell by the license tag. I police officer would have a permanent tag, right? Not sure on this one though.

Highway Patrol unmarked units sometimes have non-permanent tags, and it varies with local LEO's as well.

A regular NC license plate that begins with the letters SHP means it's a highway patrol vehicle. (SHP=State Highway Patrol, get it?) I don't think there's any kind of code for local unmarked car plates though. A lot of unmarked cop cars have regular NC license plates instead of the silver or yellow permanent plates.

A lot of the state trooper cars have switched from the bright green "State Owned Vehicle Welcome to NC" plate on the front bumper to a black NC Highway Patrol plate with the state outline in yellow (looks just like the sleeve patch on the uniform). They're much less noticeable at a distance in your rearview mirror.

I do plan on getting a used crown vic sometime soon, mainly to scare the shit out of other drivers. I've outfitted my current SUV with a bright green welcome to NC plate, several extra antennas, and dark tinted windows, and it does seem to spook some drivers. The major drawback to driving a crown vic would be people in front of you slowing down and preventing you from driving fast enough.

nah i dont think so, there was a guy in my high school town (fuquay) who drove this car that looked just like a state trooper car, with the colors like reversed or something.

and instead of STATE TROOPER on the side, it said PARTY POOPER or some shit.

the colors might have even been right, it looked realistic. maybe he bought it surplus?

the top speed of a CV is 106 for cilivians, but 129 for cops...

talk about a difference, but for obvious reasons

OK Crown Vics do not have a 5.0 engine.....

the only reason police vics go faster is they have no speed limiter as they come equipped with Z rated tires.

And having driven a vic for like 5 years now I hate people who drive like crap around me, that or like 10 under.

but other than that a old surplus state car is a awesome value

ha, it was probably one of the caprices that the state ordered years ago that came with the wrong color scheme (exactly backwards). hundreds if not thousands of cars had to be sold off at a big loss.

I'd wager to say that's more a product of the occupational hazards of being a cop, than it is of any inherent design/safety flaw in the CV. They're consistently ranked as one of the best-performing vehicles out there in a collision, probably at least in part because they (along with their Grand Marquis and Town Car platform siblings) are the LAST full-frame passenger car in existence. Everything else has gone to unibody (which can be very safe, don't get me wrong, but...)

Oh, and while I don't drive a Crown Vic, my car could easily be mistaken for one. And I'm not an asshole, at least not most of the time.

Here's the state law:

ยง 20-137.2. Operation of vehicles resembling law-enforcement vehicles unlawful; punishment.
(a) It is unlawful for any person other than a law-enforcement officer of the State or of any county, municipality, or other political subdivision thereof, with the intent to impersonate a law-enforcement officer, to operate any vehicle, which by its coloration, insignia, lettering, and blue or red light resembles a vehicle owned, possessed, or operated by any law-enforcement agency.

It's kind of vague when you think about it. "Resembles" could mean just kind of looks like or looks exactly like. "Coloration" is vague too; I've seen plenty of decomissioned cop cars being driven by civilians, with the department insignia removed, like blue & white crown vics in Raleigh. No mention is made of antennas or wearing a smokey the bear hat.

That's annoying sometimes, but usually after a sec they'll pull into the lane to the right and let you by. Sucks on a two-lane road though.
