Hey, this coming may is my last semester and I've postponed taking my english elective until now. I didnt realize i could register so early, I'm kicking myself, and the only two english classes I seem to be able to fit into the schedule are ENG220, TH 3:00-4:15 with Grimwood and ENG252, TH 4:30-5:45 with StamperI've seen a few negative reviews of grimwood on pickaprof, but not much on stamper. the other class i see available is a waitlist spot for intro to shakespeare, 8:45am TH with Hunt...Help me out guys, thanks

Grimwood is actually a sweetheart, though he can be a little harsh on grading your papers: he's very particular. He wants to make sure your writing improves over the course of the class. He does, however, give you every guideline he grades by and is always available for discussing/editing papers. I've gotten an A- in both classes that I've had with him (221, 497A).I don't know anything about Stamper.Hunt's a funny guy: maybe you should WL that one and see if it moves any.

Stamper was okay ... the only thing I remember from the class was daily homework. you had to turn in several papers plus there were essay exams. lots of reading, too. but i had stamper a long time ago so things may have changed.

if 252 is early american lit, I recommend the class but with Prioli as the teacher. Can't say anything about the instructors you listed. Also, have you looked at distance ed.? http://distance.ncsu.edu/courses/spring08/ENG.html

i had grimwood for ENG 220. He was alright, rather boring though.he gave quizzes every so often that weren't too bad. generally he would just take a little time at the beginning of class and ask about 20 short/one-word answer questions. usually 15/20 or so equated to 100%, so it was just a way of letting people who pay enough attention keep their grade up. i think there were 3 papers to write over the semester. and a midterm and final that consisted of some short answer questions and essays... nothing out of the ordinary.the good news about ENG 220 is that it is "Great Works of Western Literature", which means pretty much all the stuff you have to read in that class has spark/cliffs notes: Odyssey, Metamorphoses, Divine Comedy, etc., so it can make it much less time consuming than some other courses.

I really like Dr. Stamper. I had him for English Grammar and he's a nice, friendly guy. I don't know anything about Grimwood.

My wife says Grimwood is good.

i had stamper. he was a good teacher, but expected a lot of reading (i never did the reading however and still ended up with a B+). he was a fairly strict grader on papers and exams. i think it would have been a good class if i had done the reading and was interested in that stuff.

i had grimwood for my senior seminar... real nice guy. he'll rip up your papers, but he's willing to help you out too. but, if you're not an english geek, i could see how you'd find him boring.
