K, so the internet in my house is really slow, considering two of my roommates seem to always download shit with bittorrents. Last night the internet was horrible, my laptop couldn't even get online to our router because of something - I was able to connect to the neighbors just fine. This happens a lot more than I like.My other roommate and I have asked them to be courteous and only do it at night, but seeing the condition of the kitchen, I can see how that'll go.Is there a way I can go into the router and easily put restrictions on the amount of torrent traffic that goes through? I dunno if I'll actually do it, but I'd like the option...

i'm sure your ISP would be more than happy to help you block p2p traffic
10/30/2007 5:57:58 PM
or you could handle it like a man and simply ask your roommates to cap their dl speed
10/30/2007 5:58:25 PM
get them some client with a scheduler (uTorrent) and then have them set the schedule to torrent at night and when no-one is there.
10/30/2007 5:59:56 PM
Even better, yes, you can manage their connection for them:http://www.dd-wrt.com/See if your router is supported and install this ... if it's not, then buy one that is and install this.
10/30/2007 6:17:21 PM
You tried to see if you can get an open wireless connection?
10/30/2007 6:18:00 PM
get a linksys 54gl. i got that to regulate my roommates porn addiction so i can do more important things. like prioritize my connection for better porn download speeds.
10/30/2007 6:30:23 PM
Go to the router config menu and block their MAC addresses for certain times or all together until they cut that shit out.
10/30/2007 6:54:12 PM
go tell em to stop. if they don't, rough em up till they get the picture.
10/30/2007 6:56:44 PM
just block the ports on your router.
10/30/2007 6:56:54 PM
dont block the portsbut set up the traffic so it only gets about 1-2 kB/sthey will get frustrated and stop downloading

10/30/2007 8:55:21 PM
tell them to tap into your neighbors connection instead of you
10/30/2007 9:15:57 PM
Maybe they have your port, ip, mac restricted on the use by prioritizing the bandwidth. I used to setup routers so that our equipment would get top priority, then we gave them what was left over.

i like prioritizing based on servicethat way they will beat their head against the wall trying to figure out what is wrong when all other services work normally
10/31/2007 2:36:12 PM
I SENT YOU A PM PETERABOUT THIS
10/31/2007 2:41:41 PM
10/31/2007 2:47:11 PM
i'm with golovko on this one

Why don't you tell them to correct the torrent settings so that it doesn't allow so many connections per seed/leechers. this way your router isn't flooded with requests. Thats probably whats happening. They aren't maximizing your bandwidth per se but they are flooding your router with requests. They can get the exact same speeds without flooding the router if you limit connections per torrent. uTorrent is good with fixing this.
10/31/2007 3:05:21 PM
i dont know about requests, but if theyre on roadrunner and dudes torrent program is uploading @ 40kb/s then that'll sap the connection with the quickness.
10/31/2007 3:54:22 PM
goto their computers and add hosts entries for the torrent trackers they use. they'll never be able to figure out what's going on.
10/31/2007 5:42:12 PM
i'd give their ipaddress to Tiberius if i really didnt like them
10/31/2007 5:44:54 PM
use arping to "notify" your friends computers that their gateway IP address has a new non-existent MAC address
10/31/2007 6:05:08 PM
^^why don't you get right on that dnl. Here i'll help you with it. Their ipaddresses are 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101 [Edited on October 31, 2007 at 6:05 PM. Reason : ...]

I THINK THE REAL QUESTION HERE ISHOW MUCH DO YOUR ROOMATES KNOW ABOUT ROUTER CONFIG?
11/1/2007 7:58:48 AM
o i'm sure the guy living in the basement knows a thing or two...although he couldn't quite figure why his old wireless adaptor wouldn't connect to the WPA router.I'll look into this either tonight or this weekend when I get some more time to fool around with it.
11/1/2007 9:00:19 AM
I can't believe all the suggestions have to do with changing router settingsjust freakin talk to themif they don't listen, or are jackasses, THEN fuck with the router
11/1/2007 11:09:40 AM
^ I think we were assuming that some talking has already been done.

get uTorrentrun the scheduler to throttle your speeds during the day / when you use the internet most.profit?
11/1/2007 11:53:48 AM
i still don't understand how they cock blocked you. were you trying to log on to match.com or something?
11/1/2007 1:59:20 PM
im telling youarpingit works like a charma single command, no more problems until arp cache timeout
11/1/2007 2:02:27 PM

Switch to comcast.
11/1/2007 2:50:32 PM
"i'd give their ipaddress to Tiberius if i really didnt like them"haha, are you seriouse. they all share one ip to the world. and then there ips that the router gives them can change from time to time if its dynamic, which by the sound of things most likely are.Tiberius some wannabe script kiddy hacking, show my friends what i can do kinda person.this is so friggen funny.
