yep, took it summer 06... not that bad. I thought I was better at lit than math, so I studied a LOT for the math and only a little for the lit - big mistake. Study both sections equally.

the GRE is not much worse than the SAT... you just know more by now.

[Edited on October 29, 2007 at 11:51 PM. Reason : hmm... you do mean the literature *part* of the GRE, right?]

i think he means the subject test

i studied for it all summer and then punked out at the last second--the job market for English PhDs is pretty competitive. best of luck if you decide to take it, though. getting into a good program makes all the difference.

The regular GRE is exactly the same as the SAT, except maybe the words are a little more obscure.

Not sure about the subject tests.

if it's anything like the math subject test, it is hard as balls

Wow... did you really just say that?

The GRE has a literature section? Yours did? Wow... I am speechless. No smiley will do your post justice.

True. Subject tests are damn hard. That's why they are required only by the top schools, such as MIT, Stanford, etc., to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I have to take this on Saturday. The practice test was fairly difficult.

I'm talking about the subject test

should I take the general GRE, the subject test, or both?

the subject test might be a good idea because I will be well studied in literature
I'll be taking my Senior Competency exam around the same time (early February)

it's been a while for me...

but if I remember correctly, I think the GRE general was required for every grad school I applied to. Certain schools and programs required the GRE subject test as well, but not all.

is it possible to take them both concurrently?

probably not. I'm not positive about that though.
But you would probably want to take them separately anyway. Just so that you can 'master' the subject matter of one test and devote your energy towards that before moving on to the next. That way, you're not diving your attention/effort studying for two tests.

yeah

I'm seeing that the GRE subject test is not available in February
I'd either have to take it in November (won't be prepared for that) or wait until April

I can take the general exam in February though
I'll do that

I never knew there *were* separate exams... the GRE I took was one exam with three parts - math, literature, and essays.

The general exam you can literally take any time. Like 6 days a week, whenever you want, as long as you schedule it a month ahead of time.

It's all on a computer. And you get your results immediately.

I'll do well, I think, on the literature and essay part
I'll have to brush up on my basic math skills

I don't know no geometrics

aha

anyone that posts on TWW can do well on the essay part. Basically, you're just picking apart an argument logically, raising, and defending your own points

I know how TWWers LOOOOVE to argue to the death about any and everything.....especially if they're wrong.

So you are still calling it "literature".

(Also, just like there are SAT IIs in various subjects, there are GRE subject tests in all sorts of fields: languages, sciences, math, social sciences, etc)

Quote :
"I'll do well, I think, on the literature and essay part"

And so are you, now.

PEOPLE, the English/verbal/language section on the GRE General test (and the SAT I) is NOT LITERATURE.

Quote :
"should I take the general GRE, the subject test, or both?"

The general one is required by all programs in all universities. The subject tests are only required by selective programs/universities. If it is required, then you have to take it obviously. If it is not required by the programs you are applying to, take it only if you can do well on it. As I said in an earlier post:

True. Subject tests are damn hard. That's why they are required only by the top schools, such as MIT, Stanford, etc., to separate the wheat from the chaff.
