I'm putting new plugs in my hemi and have heard that you shouldn't use platinum plugs in this engine. Anybody have any insight?

are the current spark plugs iridium? if so, they should last longer than that.

If the manufacturer recommends 30k, they aren't platinum or irridium or anything more than a plain old resistor plug.

i got platinums.$54 for all 16. it's a Ram 1500. Dodge put regular copper plugs in it from the factory and i read on a message board that the platinums will throw off codes. didn't make any sense though. I went to advance and the guy told me that the dealer usually gets platinum plugs from them.

that job is just too much work to do every 30K

the dealer does NOT go to advance for fucking plugs everytime they do a 60k service on those

if the factory didnt use them and people claim they throw codes then you should NOT have used them. thats just stupid.

You DO know why they use two plugs per cylinder, don't you?

The fucking things would never pass inspection with just one. CO and NOx levels too high because of shitty combustion chamber design (because they were more or less intent on using the hemi configuration with a few mods--the name says all, sells all). So another plug required for better, more uniform flamefront propagation.

nosir. I kept up with a lot of the science and tech rags when the Hemi came out. Been knowing this for years.

A lot of engines with multiple plugs per cylinder do so because of the high amount of EGR occurring, or perhaps chamber shortcomings resulting from a particular valvetrain geometry (as in 2 valves per cylinder engines primarily).

the dealer's changing them, I just was'nt going to pay dealer price for plugs. if there is an issue they'll tell me before hand. From this point forward, I will consult optimusprimer on my maintenance decisions since he is apparently so emotional over my engine.

Well, that too. But MAE 408 when I took it kinda sucked. I've done a lot of extracurricular reading over the years. You'd be amazed at the stuff on the 9th floor of DH Hill.

Dude, if it's stock just find out what the OEM plug is and go with it. The 3/8th of a HP you might gain is not going to help the seat dyno at all.

p.s.

they will throw codes, misfire usually iirc.

if it does, you'll get a p03xx (xx denotes cylinder number) or a p0300 (multiple cylinder misfire).

i REALLY hope they're not bosch platinums, those are almost guaranteed problems. a lot of people have had success with the autolites, but still a few with issues.

^^pasty? They're called rednecks. Don't be so bitter. We all know that big engine makes more horsepower than your wankel, and is probably more fuel efficient. Well at least it will run longer.

^^I don't like you so get off my nuts.

^Nah wasting money on exhaust for a truck is stupid. If it passes inspection leave it alone. I'd rather have 4 tanks of gas. But I do like the way v8s sound. I guess you don't, so that makes you a homo.

i stuck with regular plugs. the dealer said that for some reason platinums and iridiums don't run very well in the hemi. it's still 345 HP with regular plugs.
