i think i made this thread a long time ago, but just seeing whats going on in California, and the fact that something could potentially happen anywhere, i was wondering if anyone keeps a stash of food, water, and supplies for an emergency.or does anyone have a shelter, guns, etc...
10/23/2007 9:54:12 PM
i'm prepared for this thread. so yes.
10/23/2007 9:54:51 PM
haha, its not a disaster yet, lets wait and see....

10/23/2007 9:56:16 PM
10/23/2007 10:02:31 PM
The house I used to live in had a Zombie Outbreak Survival plan, but no Fire Escape plan.
10/23/2007 10:03:10 PM
no, but neither does shelter or supplies. guns are for the scavengers, see katrina
10/23/2007 10:03:16 PM
I can loot whatever I need during emergency situations from the better prepared survivors. I also keep a couple gallons of water along with plenty of canned meats and vegetables in a pantry.
10/23/2007 10:14:32 PM
^thats why i want guns, for people like you, haha.
10/23/2007 10:16:41 PM
I can barter some of my excess firearms off to you for essential supplies in the case of a natural disaster, as long as essential supplies include copious amounts of drugs and alcohol.
10/23/2007 10:24:13 PM
yes. i have an emergency stash of food, tons of bottled water, extra toilet paper, and extra batteries for flashlights and a radio. and a supply of alcohol if shit gets really bad.
10/23/2007 10:50:20 PM
Water, MREs, canned soup, tent, sleeping bag, shotgun, rifle, pistols, huge cache of ammo, headlamps, flishlights, chainsaw, 4x4 truck...i could be ready for just about anything within a matter of minutes.
10/24/2007 9:04:28 AM
nope. but I am prepared for an alien invasion
10/24/2007 9:17:14 AM
i'm with him^^and actually we have 3 tents plus a pop up shelter and 3 sleeping bags. 5 gallon jugs of water plus a big sam's case of 20oz bottled water. a couple of packs of gatorade. sam's case of tomato soup and another of green beans, plus a bunch of other chicken noodle/vegetable soups.instant mashed potatoesbunch of frozen chickengas and charcoal grillssam's case of toilet paper and paper towelstons of batteries, 4-5 flashlights, a radio that also plays TV audioi own the house so i keep all of the documents (insurance, titles, etc) plus passports, old drivers licences, pet vaccination records, etc in a fireproof/waterproof safe.if it really was a HUGE disaster, guns would be necessary to hunt food, unless you plan to just stop eating meat. plus, in a huge disaster you get crazies trying to steal your shit (your food and water esp) so you need to keep them away.if you ever think you'll need extra water, and it's early enough, and you're still in your house, start filling up the bath tubs and find all of the pitchers and buckets you have to fill up (esp since pets will need drinking water also).[Edited on October 24, 2007 at 9:26 AM. jesus can we say overkill?
10/24/2007 9:21:42 AM
short answer -- no.
10/24/2007 9:22:11 AM
^^Would you have said that if you were stuck in Floyd or Katrina?[Edited on October 24, 2007 at 9:24 AM. Reason : ^^]
10/24/2007 9:24:16 AM
^I was around for Floyd and Fran. I knew Katrina was going to hit New Orleans several days before, and could have easily peaced out. It's not like we don't know when these things are coming.
10/24/2007 9:27:33 AM
no, it's not overkill. i was in rocky mount in floyd and the flood that followed. my grandparents' house floated off their foundation. we lived on an island for 7 days. a canoe wouldn't be a bad idea either...thankfully we had the jetskis at home during floyd you were around? so what. most of us "were around" during floyd. where you actually there?katrina was a different case than floyd. new orleans and all of that coastal area is below sea level or it's on the coast. they knew there was a big ass cat5 hurricane coming straight for them and they have all those levees that can break. they probably didn't expect them to bust, but that's always a risk and a possibility in a town on the water built below sea level using levees and other ways to restrain water from where it naturally wants to go. esp with winds blowing a million miles an hour and shitty construction/maintenance.rocky mount, tarboro, princeville, etc are not on the coast. we're next to a small river, with no levees, and the flood didn't come for a few days after the hurricane. there were no evacuation warnings/mandates for us.[Edited on October 24, 2007 at 9:33 AM. 10/24/2007 9:29:37 AM
uh, they SHOULD have expected to have been flooded.
10/24/2007 9:34:51 AM
Yes, but think of the people who live there. They might not have been the smartest to start with...If you aren't smart enough to leave you can at least be prepared.
10/24/2007 9:43:09 AM
ok if they aren't smart enough to leave, do you really think they have the ability to prepare for the worst?
10/24/2007 9:54:17 AM

^^um no but that's not the point of this thread[Edited on October 24, 2007 at 10:05 AM. Reason : ]

no but reading this thread should make me get prepared
10/24/2007 10:24:26 AM
I should probably prepare for zombie outbreak.
10/24/2007 10:26:02 AM
I'll take the calculated risk to not waste time and money on this junk.

smath74, i hope you are kidding. a lot of the people in new orleans didn't really have the financial resources to just simply leave...[Edited on October 24, 2007 at 12:05 PM. Reason : unless you're not talking about Katrina. ]

i don't see why california brought this to your mind... if these people had disaster supplies in their house they just burned up with the rest of the place and didn't help them at all

WTF is a grab and go bag
10/24/2007 3:57:53 PM
A bag that you grab and fill with personal items if you have to evacuate, clothes, water, food and such.

10/24/2007 4:28:13 PM
I'm not prepared, really, although I've thought about getting some of the basics. I don't think the world's gonna end any time soon, but I guess I'd like to be able to stick around if the shit does hit the fan.I do have a Department of Defense water barrel, which is pretty cool. Left in my garden shed by the previous owners.Out of the things that I'd actually buy, I'll probably eventually get a water filter, some better general purpose tools, and a still so's I can make me some moonshine after the apocalypse is over.]
10/24/2007 4:30:13 PM
with the exception of princevillethat doesn't change anything about rocky mount
10/24/2007 4:36:04 PM
oh I agree. I was just saying that because the levee is so prominent there. To answer the original question...I'd say I'm moderately prepared. I have decent protection. I buy 95% of my food from Sam's Club which means I usually have at least a few cases of non-perishable items that I could grab if necessary. I'm a hiker/camper so I have more than enough gear to stay warm and sheltered in any conditions that NC might throw at me (15 degree sleeping bag/pad combo, two nice tents, nice outdoor clothing, etc.) I'd say I could pack my junk and be out of the house in 20-30 minutes if necessary.Oh yeah, and I'm halfway intelligent which is more important than anything you can buy to get ready for a disaster.
