I need to take two ECE electives in the spring, and I'm thinking about:492 J - High freq ICs with Barlage492 M - Bioinformatics with C. Gordonand School Tool isn't helping.Anyone had these?I'm guessing Barlage's class is similar to the 302 / 403 path ... how about 492M? Has anyone had Gordon? Also thinking about 492 K w/ Kolbas but it doesn't fit my schedule as well.[Edited on October 17, 2007 at 9:52 PM. Reason : =]

I've had 492 J (Dr. Barlage) and 492 R (Dr. Kolbas). In fact, I was in the first semester they ever offered 492 R. Either way, I loved both of those classes.492 R will take a LOT of your time (unless he changed the way it's done) BUT you will learn sooooo much practical stuff that you can actually use (especially when it comes time for senior design). It's mostly analog engineering and you get tons of practice learning to read datasheets. When I was in it, you had to build your own power supply with 4 different power rails and your own function generator (1Hz to 1MHz) and use the both of them throughout the semester - so you had to design and build them well the first time. It was alot of fun and I do find Kolbas to be pretty funny, but good GOD, does he know alot of stuff. Unlike some of my professors, he will challenge you to come up with outside the box ideas, but he won't leave you floundering if you get stuck. He's really helpful.492 J was also one of my favorite classes. It is really a combination of 303 and 403 and it is the older (more high speed) brother to 422. You do alot with microstrip lines and Advanced Design System and will become pretty familiar with smith charts and impedance matching etc. Barlage has a good sense of humor too and the class was pretty small when I took it. This class is the undergrad version of 719, which he teaches to his grad students.I can't speak for 492 M as I never took it, but I hope this helps you out!

Thanks, that helps!

Just make sure they don't switch classes up on you. This semester I am taking 492A which was suppose to be Liquid Crystalization and on the first day of class the teacher was like "sorry, pack tracks was wrong. This is Power Electronics". I stuck with it and it is going ok but it does take a lot of time.

i'd recommend Kolbas, he's a kickass teacher[Edited on October 20, 2007 at 9:39 PM. Reason : if it's that Laser Electronics course it's hard as fuck though]

492J was torture for me. If you want an easy grade w/o doing much work than this class is for you. Also, I hope you enjoyed learning about reflections and shit in 303 b.c you will use this extensively. The only redeeming quality of this class was Professor Barlage is an awesome guy.

^^ you may want to name the actual class and teacher since they seem to change the classes every semester or so.^^^ why does it not fill a req. 492A is counting for me as a 400 level class[Edited on November 2, 2007 at 8:04 AM. Reason : .]

it's the entrepreneurship class....1 credit hour to be a Virtual Employee and 4 credits for senior design i think...i'm not an ECE major so i couldn't tell ya. I was just an inside PR kid.

^^ some may stay the same but they rotate some out and replace them with new classes

Take 492X with JJ Brickley....that class was easy as hell....JJ rules ECE!!!

^ HahaI've had 435 so I know better
11/16/2007 10:32:49 PM
I almost did not decide to be ECE b.c brickley ran the ECE info session and i was just like "damn if all my professors are like this guy then i'm gonna have a shitty 4 years"

i had him for 435 in a summer onceand it was wild..totally hated control systems(and what do you know, now im a control systems engineer)however, for 492 classes, the lasers class was the easiest A in ecethe nano class with misra was the hardest class i could have ever imagined (but i learned a fucking shitton... it was just a ton of material, very quick)
