If I apply for a NCDL, will I surrender my Virginia DL? I've searched the DMV site to no avail, but I'm sure there has to be a couple of people on here who have done something similar. I need to obtain a NCDL but I might move back to Virginia in the next year.

Since states' license databases are interconnected, more than likely they're going to know that you have another license.

If you say you lost your VA license, they'll probably either refer you to Virginia's DMV to settle, or they'll cancel your VA license for you. Either way, you won't have a valid VA license.

I'm guessing here, but I assume you can use Google as well as I can.

^correct. nc dmv will notify va dmv that you've gotten an nc license, and your va license will become invalid.

if you want another license the easiest way is to jut purchase a duplicate - if you don't turn in a license you have to retake the tests

You have to take the tests to get a license for a different state anyway though. And yes, they will take your Virginia one, or at least they took my Georgia one.

you will only do the sign test if you hand in your old license though - not the entire set of tests

You have to take more than the sign test for a NC license. You just don't have to take the road test. After you pass the tests, they take your other state license and give you a NC license.

I had to take more than the sign test. I distinctly remember shit about a tractor that was sure not on my Georgia test.

i imagine the rules could have changed since i last did this - in 2000 i turned in my KY license - looked at some signs - read back what they were - paid the $$ and got my NC license

when moving to GA recently - i just turned in my NC license and i was supposed to take an eye test but the guy just wrote down what he thought i had and gave me my license after i paid the $$

ha that reminds me, i have an arizona license that i got for nothing but money and an emissions test

they never said shit about it here when i came back

i know if you try to get one in ohio, they are linked with here and check for pending DUIs and stuff. i figured most states were that way.
