I'm running a ~2003 computer with a version of XP that I am not sure is licensed or not. A small store overhauled the system a couple of years ago and I don't remember him charging for windows. When I try to get any program to play a DVD it says "unable to play because windows is either missing codec or the video drivers are out of date." What will happen if I attempt to use Windows update if the OS is illicit? Can you guys give me some tips on how to get going here? What free programs/codec do you use to play DVDs?The video card is NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200]]

having plenty of codecs is always good. get k-lite. if you have xp pro or media center, odds are you can still use window updates on an illicit copy. if your copy is registered as a student copy, then updates will work fine, with no hassle from wga.
