http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/ncsu/story/738440.htmlsnapshot:RALEIGH - And then there was one.Jamelle Eugene always wanted to be the starting tailback at N.C. State. But not by a process of elimination, not because of injuries to Toney Baker and Andre Brown."With any competitor, you always want to beat somebody out of their job or earn the spot based on your performance," Eugene said in an interview. "When somebody gets hurt and that's the way you take it, it's difficult."But you've got to move on. Andre and Toney are like brothers, but you've got to grab the torch and keep running."In the Pack's opener against Central Florida, Baker was the starter, but injured a knee late in the game. Just like that, the junior was out for the season.nice read

^if Eugene does well and helps lead us to a victory over ECU, someone might be able to photoshop that to say Hurricane Eugene the game's date, and have a pic of Jamelle situated in the eye of the hurricane. it might look pretty neat.

Eugene's making most of big chancePatience and persistence fuel Pack tailback's riseRALEIGH --A lot of 7-year-olds dream of playing in the NFL while they watch football. The dream dies as they stuff their faces with chips or cheese curls and spend Sundays on the couch. Jamelle Eugene, N.C. State's tailback, was different. He saw NFL players on TV doing resistance training, dragging heavy tires behind them as they ran. Soon he was outside with a rope around his waist, dragging patio furniture across the backyard because he wanted to play football one day.He followed the blue-collar example set by his parents, Paul and Yolanda, a delivery truck driver and beautician."Sometimes you have to work harder than other people to get what you want," Eugene said.Sometimes you have to be patient, too. Eugene arrived at N.C. State in 2005 as the sixth tailback on the depth chart behind Reggie Davis, Darrell Blackman, Bobby Washington, Toney Baker and Andre Brown.Davis moved to linebacker, and Blackman moved to receiver. Washington transferred. Earlier this season, Baker and Brown suffered injuries that made Eugene the starter."He had the talent and he had the ability," said N.C. State coach Tom O'Brien. "He just had to have the forum to show it."Pulling his weightThe first time N.C. State center Luke Lathan saw Eugene in the weight room, he couldn't believe it.At 5-foot-91/2 and 195 pounds, Eugene squats as much weight as some linemen. He is the product of strength coach Sam Dollar's intense Naples (Fla.) High program that had players doing full lifting workouts during the season. Eugene, who calls Dollar a genius, chose N.C. State over South Florida after an expected Alabama scholarship offer failed to materialize. For one day during optional seven-on-seven workouts before his freshman year, Eugene tried cornerback because N.C. State's backfield was so crowded. But then-coach Chuck Amato kept him on offense. Eugene started coach Tom O'Brien's first season as the third-down back. Then Baker tore a knee ligament in the opener against Central Florida. Brown broke a foot in the sixth game, against Florida State. As a second-grader, Eugene had decided he wanted to play football or basketball or be a scientist. He soon dropped scientist from his list and decided on football out of concern his height would be an impediment in basketball. He finally got his big chance as a sophomore at N.C. State.Tough little guyToward the end of Eugene's first start, a Virginia defender complimented him. "You're tougher than I thought," Eugene said the player told him.Last week, Eugene cut back inside on a stretch play and collided with free safety Deunta Williams, one of North Carolina's strongest tacklers. The blow knocked Williams backward."Everybody thinks that because I'm 195 pounds, that I just can't bring the wood," Eugene said. "But I have strength."He saw green and sprinted to the end zone to complete a 5-yard run, one of three touchdowns in a 159-yard rushing performance. He has 524 rushing yards over the past five games and has been a key factor in N.C. State's four-game winning streak. The Wolfpack (5-5, 3-3 ACC) can become bowl eligible with a win Saturday at Wake Forest (6-4, 4-3). Despite 32 carries and six catches last week, Eugene said he wasn't hurting the next day and remains fresh for Wake Forest."A lot of dudes would be sore," he said. "I know a lot of guys who weren't given the ball as much who were sore."http://www.charlotte.com/colleges/story/364954.html[Edited on November 16, 2007 at 3:23 PM.
