I need to get in touch with Dr. Syvia about getting her to write a grad school recommendation for me... anyone know if she's around this semester? I wrote her an email, but she hasn't responded and doesn't have an office phone # listed. I seem to remember that she only wrote rec's for people if they asked her in person... anyone know if that holds true? thanks!

You know on the NCSU homepage theres a link across the top that says "Find People" and you can search for faculty/student contact information.Furthermore, there is a department website for the biochem department that has her email linked on it...

Plus, if you look in the current course listings you'll see her section of biochem 451 and where its taught (you could always just go see her in person after class)

Latest rumor I heard is Dr Sylvia is not teaching anymore and both bio chem sections have been combined under Dr Knopp

Not sure if it is true or not, but someone in one of my labs is/was in her class this semester said that he heard that she has cancer. Like I said, not sure if it is true. But that it what I heard today.

I heard something similar this morning.. they guy said it was in the late stages.. It could just be a rumor though.

I know she is not well liked at NCSU, but she was always nice to us when we were waiting for Knopp's problem session. With regard to rumors I've heard everything from dementia to cancer. I would assume the department will say something at some point.

Just a word of caution about Dr. Silvia and recs... I had her 2 years ago, and busted my ass to get an A+ in her class. I visited her frequently and she said she would be happy to give me a rec for medical school. The next semester I drove up from FL (moved home after graduating) to give her the paper work and she blew up in my face and cussed me out for not going through the Med School Advisory Committee, which is optional. Long story short, I had to locate my Physics teacher from 3 years before and get a rec at the last minute. If you've had Silvia, you know how hit and miss she is, so be careful. I respected her greatly as a professor, and then lost all respect for the way she acted towards me. Keep as many good relationships as you can with professors!
