this cool video got me thinking of how to concieve of the higher dimensions

the way i can understand higher dimensions is to set up rules of how a lower dimension relates to the higher dimension

1. a higher dimension has points outside of the universe of the lower dimension
2. a higher dimensional universe has directions that dont exist in lower dimensions
3. you can move between 2 points in a lower dimension without traversing through that universe by using a combination of higher dimensional directions with presently available directions

ex: to go from point A to point B in a 1 dimensional line, where the only directions are up and down, you can use a combination of higher dimensional directions, in this case 2nd dimenional directions of left and right, with up or down to go from point A to point B
example: if you are at point A and point B is down from you on the line, you can go left, down, then right, and arrive at B without having traveled in your 1 dimensional universe

this can be applied to the our universe, where we can theoretically go from one point in the universe to another by traveling through time and just arrive at the other point withough traveling through this universe, and so on....

why not? Even string theory doesn't know what string theory be.

But, yeah, this is not the standard reasoning for there being 10 dimensions.

The real reason is that quantum mechanics forces strict conditions on the theory. In order for the quantization to make sense you have to let the strings live in one of the critical dimensions d=10 or d=26.

I think though that the real picture now is an 11-dimensional one, 10-dimensional supergravity appears as a low energy limit of M-theory. These "branes" provide some sort of curved background on which the 10-dimensional super strings propagate.

Truth is, it'd take at least a decade of calculation before you really understood it. I know I have at least another year or three, if I ever get around to it.

i think my explanation of the first 4 dimensions was pretty good.
as long as you can set up rules you can keep imagining the next higher dimension
