This is for listing all the stupid reasons people pull out of buying your vehicle from you.

1) A guy drove up from Orlando, FL today to pick up my Jeep Wrangler. He complains that the vehicle isn't as powerful/fast as his dads CJ7 that has a V8. Gets in his car, drives his ass back to Florida sans Jeep.

2) Previous buyer that fell through came down on Saturday. Liked the way the Jeep drove and shifted, said it was very solid mechanically. He complained that the paint wasn't perfect even though I had provided pictures of this, described it to him on the phone (numerous times) and put in the listing. Whined that he already had a "trail rig" and he should probably get something more "practical" as a daily driver, something he could have figured out BEFORE driving all the way from Boone with a certified check already made out to me.

3) I had my Saturn up on Craigslist and this woman and her daughter wasted nearly an hour of my time before she let it be known that she was buying the car for her teenage daughter. Teenage daughter can't drive a stick and doesn't want to learn. The fact the car was a 5 speed was displayed prominently in the ad.

1)
guy and i setup a time to trade motorcycles. he has me get the title notarized as we have been talking on the phone for hours about them etc..

he lives in nj. we setup to meet in va on a sat. and exchange titles and bikes. i have several vids of the bike running and bunch of pictures.

guy backs out day of saying he has to work and cant get off. then he says he's still really interested and wants to go through with the trade next weekend. he's extremely apologetic. then next weekend he says he cant bc his wife wont let him.

douche.

2)
guy comes to see my ram when i had it up for sale. then complains about the high miles even tho it was clearly displayed in the ad.

3)
guy comes to see a previous motorcycle, complains about a tiny tiny ding in the tank caused by an acorn.. even tho i told him about it and showed pictures of it. he low balls me after he drove from conn. to come and see it. i tell him no. he gets pissed and drives off.

I like when they test drive it, tell you how much they love it, and then offer you $3000 less than the listed price. I just be like "GTFO." It's not worth negotiating with those folks.

a couple guys came to drive my 5speed ram. said they drove a 5 speed b4. then stalled it out like 8 times on the test drive, saying it was the truck. so i would get in and drive it no problem around for them.

never meet them anywhere, you'll just end up wasting your time half of the time

if they want it, tell them where it is and when they can come to see it

The hell with selling things on craigslist, if 100 people email you

-80 are wasting your time and wishing
-10 will call you and then ask every question under the sun (no matter how detailed your post is)
-5 have the money but mommy and daddy don't like the vehicle
-the other 5 have the money and lowball the hell out of you

^ Pretty much. I don't even mind being lowballed, but be upfront about it and don't waste my time. If you're only willing to pay $3000 less than I'm asking just say so before I leave work early, wash the vehicle, and let your stank ass drive it around the beltline.

Very true. I had 77 replies on a boat trailer I had for sale and 2 people showed up. My favorites are the ones who reply via e-mail even though you say specifically to call and e-mails will not be returned.

I'm one of those people that asks a lot of questions and never follows through. Only because I email 20 other people a fair amount of questions also. I only contact you again if after all the questions I am actually interested in buying the car.

i have some guy hardballing the hell out of me over a vehicle right now. his initial offer was $1k (i'm asking $2500). i let him work me a little, but i finally gave him my final offer. he's sent me THREE emails since then, offering an extra $50 each time. i've responded each time with my same price. maybe after about five or six more we'll be there...

http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/car/442178195.html

called this dude about his S2000.

he's asking $14.5k (extremely good price).

He wants to trade for an Evo VIII, and I offered him my IX in trade (he doesn't really know the difference). he asked how much cash I wanted on top of his trade, and I said "well, if you give me $13.5k, we'll both be getting our asking prices."

he's like "Uhhh, I don't know man, I was thinking more like 4-5k."

Uhhh, yeah, ok dude.

haven't see this one before.

"Sounds Good.
I will like to proceed with the transaction asap and my mode of payment will be via Electronic Cashier Check drawn on my bank (Bank Of America) as there are too many scams on internet with bogus Money Orders and personal checks,The electronic cashier check will be sent to your email so all you need to do is purchase a business check paper at any Office depot or stationary store to print the check and immediately when you print the check proceed to your Bank to cash or deposit the check, the Business check paper cost $20 only but i will offer you $50 to purchase the Business check paper and for accepting my mode of payment.I should have handled this myself but i am not available to do this now i am currently away for my company seminar that is why i want you to do this to facilitate the transaction.
The car will be picked up from you by my shipper so you don't have to worry about shipment of the car also i am in no rush to pick up the car till funds are cleared at the bank.
Electronic Cashier checks is fast, secure and best method of payment because it is instant once you purchase Business check paper all the process of printing and cashing of the E-check can be done within 2 hours.
Proceed to delete the advert of this item if my mode of payment is accepted and get back to me asap to complete this transaction.

Regards
Raymond"

so how do these companies work who call you up and say "I'm from a company who provides financing for buyers of used vehicles. We have several people who want your car and are approved for the loan. We're highly rated by the BBB, offer a money back satisfaction guarantee, and call quickly sell your car for more than your asking price. Would that be worth $300 to you?"

i mean, obviously if they could do that, they'd buy your car and sell it to their buyer themselves, taking the profit AND the financing interest...but how do these companies work? Do they just straight up take people's money and run? Seems to me it would be hard for them to stay in business for so long if the scam were that simple.

they're basically consignment companies i believe. they charge you a fee to advertise it, talk to buyers, etc.

a lot of used car dealers will do the same thing. let you sit your car on their lot, they handle showing it, etc. and you pay them a fee. sounds like this is probably just companies doing the same thing, but over the internet. look on ebay, half the cars being sold on there are being advertised/sold through a third party...

a lot of the "finance anyone/no credit/bad credit" companies will do a similar thing. you tell them you want a car, and they find ones that they're going to be able to finance. they purposely limit the choices to things they know they've got the best chance of getting their money back out of.

a lot of CL stuff is spam, and just out to get your email address, or whatever. it's been cut down since they started requiring the letter box confirmation thing, but some still gets through.

beware of newer cars listed for a pretty good deal and there isn't a phone number to go along with the ad. i keep another email account just for CL, etc.

you're right, stupid sellers abound just as much as stupid buyers though.

thought of another one i love... the "what's you bottom dollar" people. retards, if i was just going to openly tell you my bottom dollar why would i bother to list the vehicle for more? the asking price is my bottom dollar. if you want to make an offer, go for it and maybe we can work something out. i typically reply to these people with a number even higher than my asking price.

They take your money, give you some bullshit about your car is worth so much more and they both know people that will pay more and will finance them. You don't get your money back unless you take them to court.. They tried to do that shit to a friend of mine when he put his mercedes on craigslist. It took about 5 seconds of googling the company name to realize it was a scam. There's a couple of things I found from people who used to work at the company who give a lot more detail on how it works, pretty fucked up

right, right, it's a scam. that much is readily apparent.

what I don't get is how they don't get nailed.

^^ just because its a scam doesnt mean its illegal. for example pay day loans, buy here pay here lots, buying appliances rent to own etc.

none of those things are scams. they just aren't generally things that financially responsible people do.

i think these fall under the same category. technically, they are providing you a service, no matter how useless it seems... i doubt they guarantee 100% that they'll sell the vehicle, which is how they get away with it.

i know for a fact there are some companies out there that are legitimate though. i don't think they're the ones trolling classifieds sites and calling/emailing people though, you contact them. i looked into doing it at one point as a side job, offering buyer and seller representation (similar to real estate). it was more trouble than it was worth to set it up to operate legally and without liability though.

well, here we go with another dumbass seller story (i have a million of 'em, along with plenty of dumbass buyer stories)

this dude puts his 1990 Bronco up for sale on craigslist. 35" MTRs, 6" suspension lift, fresh 302 (mildly warmed over--head work, headers, big exhaust, etc). fresh 5 spd. fresh 10.25" rear. detroit locker in rear, lockrite up front. 1000W stereo. looks clean...he wants $3500, which I have no doubt someone will pay.

Well, just because I can wait as long as i want or not buy at all, I gave him my standard offer--something ridiculously low (I've had people go for it several times...just gotta find the right seller). I told him I'd give him $2500 for it whenever he wants if he didn't have any luck selling and needed it gone. He responded and said to give him a week, and if nobody beat that offer by then, it was mine.

Well, a week would've been this weekend, but I just got an email from him saying that someone busted out the rear window in an attempt to steal his stereo. Fair enough.

but then he said that I could have it as-is for $2750, or he was gonna fix it and try again to get $3500.

LIKE I'M GONNA PAY MORE AFTER IT'S FUCKED UP THAN I WAS TO BEGIN WITH?? I told him no thanks...I'm gonna let him fix it, then try to pick it up in another couple of weeks for--you guessed it--$2500.
