I'm thinking about a job in Wichita. What is Kansas like?

It would take an astronomical amount of money to get me to move to Kansas. It's Kansas man, there's a reason it's not swamped with people. I'd check out CitySearches and what not if you're serious...but seriously, think long and hard about this one.FWIW, someone on TWW lives in Kansas...unfortunately I can't recall who.

CONStaxes are higher wichita is literally in the middle of nowhereI-70 closes down all the time when it snows bc its too much work to plow endless miles of nothingness when only 5 people are wanting to drive on itPROSyou're close to denver and wichita has a decent airport so you can get out if you want todrinks are bars are super super cheapwhen my mom came to visit she said the bread, beef, milk & eggs tasted amazing compared to NCi lived in the northeastern part of kansas-- it was pretty much awful. i was only there 8 months and my blood pressure was dangerously low (bored to death), i slept 10 hours a day, watched a bunch of movies and saved tons of money because i wasn't doing anythingall i'm saying is you better have a more compelling reason besides a job to move to kansas.

Kansas, like anywhere else, is going to vary a bit by locality/region. One big difference is that there isn't nearly as much within a short drive as you have in North Carolina.Kansas City/Northeast Kansas is a bit more professional oriented.Wichita is more blue collar/industrial.Manhattan area is very military-oriented (Fort Riley), but also has K State. In general there is good, cheap beer (especially wheat beer, Boulevard out of KC is great).Even though Colorado is only one state over you will have to drive 8+ hours to go to Denver or ski.The roads are good and there is hardly any traffic. It is harder to find places to play sports.Good beef and bread, but the food is generally pretty bland. You can forget about decent ethnic food. Not very diverse, except for Southwest Kansas which is very Hispanic.Good frozen custard.1000 miles from any ocean.Very conservative, unless you live in Lawrence or Wyandotte County-KCK. Johnson County (Southwest side of KC) is more your corporate conservatives, and the rest of Kansas is social conservatives.Land/housing is cheap. Some towns will give you a free lot to build on if they think you will have kids (I'm not making this up).Weather, you will see more ice storms in that area than anything. Also the occasional tornado, but warning systems are better there.[Edited on October 9, 2007 at 11:56 AM. Reason : .]

I'm from Wichita. What these people have said is pretty much on point. It's a decent size city but there is nothing else around it. Your only other options are KC or OK City which are both about 2.5-3hrs away. The nightlife is actually pretty good, especially around Oldtown. My parents still live there, Dad works for Boeing and Mom's a nurse. If you have any questions feel free to pm me

^ I live in Kansas right now, about an hour west of Wichita. I'm in a hurry, but I'll post my feelings on the area tomorrow.
