sometimes they'll go away on their own
sometimes they have to be removed
best to get it removed before it ends up in a coronary artery. 10/5/2007 12:46:16 AM

well, they dont exactly go away. unless they have to be removed, and that is pretty rare.
they have to be anticoagulated on heparin or coumadin or something to that nature.
once you have a PE you've got it... the focus is on preventing the next one from ever happening.
taking it easy for a few days is a good idea.....you know, so another clot doesnt break loose somewhere and cause another PE. 10/5/2007 6:42:22 AM

they could try thrombolytic therapy (if was indeed a blood clot), but that would probably only really be effective in the first few hours after it happening. the most important thing, as brainysmurf said, is to prevent this from happening again. most likely it was from a DVT, so he needs to be on anticoag therapy and perhaps have a doppler study of his lower extremities to evaluate further risk. 10/5/2007 7:22:55 AM

everyone should be on lovenox :-P
Will say one thing for PEs, they can lead to some BAD codes.
