I think you mean Digital Orthography, not GIS.

yeah that would be more correct but based on the news story i'm not sure...they call it a "photography mission"...some kind of training for surveillance in an urban environment? i dunno

probably just a gov that wants updated photography for their systems but it could serve a lot of purposes. I think google just buys really old versions of this data for their google maps/google earth.

They'll probably get there eventually. It does a pretty decent job on 3-D with mountain ranges. I lived near a range for a while and the google earth image from my old place had the same skyline when taken down to the elevation view.

Wouldn't be surprised if google earth (or whatever it will be called in that day) goes live - ie. you aren't looking at static images.

EDIT

I wouldn't hold my breath on images being updated in this area. I've seen the same image for parts of the triangle for years, and I noticed that they were updated a year or so ago. I'd imagine that new ones would be at least a year or two away.

i wonder about the necessary bandwidth to go live, or potential security risks...they could obviously choose to not show live images at certain govt locations...eventually though i'm sure it will be live, or at least something that updates no less frequent than every couple weeks...seems like they could just automatically send some of the satellite photography of non-classified locations straight to google's servers

they have semi-recently added a few 3-d buildings in downtown charlotte...and i'm guessing you already are aware that most of NCSU's campus is in 3-d and much of it is textured as well

I think they already do that with the images in Google Earth, don't they?

^yeah but they dont show LIVE images of anything on google earth...they currently might show lower resolution, or just a really old image if its a sensitive govt location
