(yes this is a chitchat thread)Alternatives?Pros: - Portability - Interface - Web enabledCons: - storage is not expandable - price - itunes (i'm a linux user) - no 3rd party appsThe only alternative I know of is the Nokia n800 or whatever it is, which kinda sucks balls.

10/2/2007 6:53:12 PM
I'm posting on one right now.....I love it. Bout to show jackleg my new toy!!!
10/2/2007 6:55:08 PM
I think the deciding factor will be if I can get iTunes working under linux. If so, BUY!
10/2/2007 6:56:34 PM
i don't think you need to use itunes.
10/2/2007 7:19:06 PM
you can not use the ipod touch without itunes
10/2/2007 7:24:27 PM
i've heard otherwise, but i don't know how reliable those methods are at this point
10/2/2007 7:27:31 PM
not to be a douche but i would think a regular ipod would have a more single hand friendly interface.again i'm just curious
10/2/2007 7:28:30 PM
^ your point is a valid one
10/2/2007 7:30:12 PM
Not to buy.Wait until the next generation when they put more storage in it for the same price.
10/2/2007 7:33:09 PM
that theory will always be applicable
10/2/2007 7:34:04 PM
yeah, even steve blatantly said that.. and well, it's completely fucking obvious
10/2/2007 7:36:07 PM
its pretty easy to use. Even of you type the wrong letters it puts up the right word for you. This is a very well developed piece of equipment. I planned on returning it but im really starting to like it. Very easy to use!!! Btw...you need iTunes to start it for the first time..other than that..not sure.
10/2/2007 7:42:55 PM
I wish it had a speaker for music and videos though. This built-in speaker is only for key clicks and alarms (which its too quiet for anyway).
10/2/2007 7:47:28 PM
how much are they going for?jellyfish.com sold a few for $250 and a little more than that.[Edited on October 2, 2007 at 8:05 PM. Reason : 8GB ones]
10/2/2007 8:03:55 PM
I just went to best buy and got it for 299...but I got 30 days to return it.. And no restocking fees.
10/2/2007 10:25:00 PM
the 8gb is $299 and the 16gb is $399
10/2/2007 10:26:59 PM
Isn't it the same thing as the iphone just minus the phone part and some other small features?I have the iphone and the only thing that sucks is the internet speed...but the new one will be out shortly and I'll trade it in...
10/2/2007 10:28:31 PM
I don't think I'll ever buy an Apple product, I just don't agree with their business practices. And for me those 3rd party apps are the selling point of any PDA (that's really what this is.) No third party apps, no infrared/bluetooth sending or headphones, EXPENSIVE, and you can't use it with your operating system. What kind of question are you posing, exactly?Buy a nice PDA, an 8GB SD card, load it with linux and run whatever you want to on it. Still plays music, still browses the web, still portable. Plus you can buy a new battery in 2 years when it's shot. Blows my mind why anyone would buy iPod trash...
10/2/2007 10:31:50 PM
motion carried...i've had a linux running archos for years. go me!
10/2/2007 10:42:05 PM
^ you order off the website or from 3rd party retailer? I was looking into their new line, finally getting some specs to get my attention (plus I'm slowly picking up more and more servers that need managing and W2003 just ain't cutting it.)
10/2/2007 11:01:47 PM
i got the first three through (starting with the first hd based mp3 player i've ever seen) best buy and the last one at harmony computers.
10/2/2007 11:08:19 PM
some suggestions on what to buy instead of the iTouch? the iTouch would be perfect if it were a fully functional PDA. as for linux-based (or hax0red homebrew linux) devices, what's got a good/fast/responsive (preferably touch, rather than stylus) interface? compact size (flash memory based) is a huge plus.
10/8/2007 1:23:09 AM
I have a 4th gen regular ipod and it works fine. I could not see myself watching videos on a device with a screen smaller than my calculator.
10/8/2007 1:27:17 AM
i'm looking at devices like the ipod Touch and the archos 605 wifi, which have much larger displays. i'm not as interested in video playback as i am in wifi. the archos can be hooked up to a TV for video playback (which my ultra-portable notebook is lacking).

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190143814772&ssPageName=MERCOSI_VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX_Stores&refitem=250163999588&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&refwidgettype=osi_widgetso i'm debating whether to get this knockoff (which has its own built-in fm radio transmitter) or an actual ipod. the only downside to this generic is that it only gets 8 hrs of playback on a full charge (vs 24 hrs). other than that, i don't see why a real ipod would be better. any feedback/comments?
10/8/2007 2:44:55 AM
I'm waiting for the price to drop a bit before I buy one as a WiFi PDA.
10/8/2007 12:29:52 PM
apple does some great things with hardware, then they go and fuck it all up with their software
10/8/2007 12:39:42 PM
^^^i wouldn't buy that. the problem with knock-off devices like these is they usually have very cheap LCDs. I made the mistake of buying a knock-off GPS, and the LCD (while HUGE -- 8") had an 8 Hz refresh rate
10/8/2007 2:12:58 PM
^ well it has a samsung chip, and all those sellers have 99% positive feedback with no complaints about the product itself. i would have thought at least a few people on here have bought this. it prbly does have a cheaper lcd, but i plan on using it primarily for radio/music. radio is pretty important to me, and i've heard a lot of complaints about the ipod's external fm transmitter.
10/8/2007 3:11:23 PM
I say just go with the phone - it'd be one less thing to carry in your pocket
10/8/2007 4:32:55 PM
i'm not changing service plans... that's just dumb
10/8/2007 7:42:22 PM
heh, thats what I just Did.It sucks but I think its worth it.
10/8/2007 7:52:02 PM
sure get it, then in a few months the price will go down, and people will have what you paid $texas for, but for a lot less.
