I found an old G3 iMac in good shape and I'm playing around with it, I've only owned PCs so far (both windows and linux)
It has 9.2 on it now, but there's not much that will run on 9.2 anymore. not even firefox (and it currently has only IE5 on it, which wont even render apple's homepage right)
I did some checking and apparently 10.2 will run alright, but where do you find it? There's some copies on Ebay, but add shipping and I'd be paying more than I paid for the box. Plus, waiting a few days for an auction to end then another week or three for shipping doesn't appeal to me

Just out of curiosity I searched around some bittorrent sites and didn't find much that I would trust installing.

Anyone have a copy of Jaguar they wouldn't mind parting with or letting me borrow?
Also, is there an activation key? I'd heard somewhere no, but I'm not sure. A few of the ebay auctions only come with disks, the others don't specify

no keys for os x, just disc, but you are supposed to register the machine and they do pay attention to it, especially if you call for any support. whether that means borrowing one will work i honestly don't know, but at the same time idk just how much you could get away with. a 10.2 disc should be really really cheap though if you can find one. i think the bookstore was basically giving away panther discs a while back

Seems that OS X 10.3 Panther will run fine on a G3 iMac...
But the bookstore says they dont have any (no big surprise)

I'd give $15 for a set of disks (CD's, no DVD drive on Mac)
I guess I could post in classifieds too, not intending to cross post.. if it offends lock the classifed post please

also, I'm assuming that machine-specific disks wont work on anything but their intended boxes, would that be right?
Like a set of disks for a Mac Mini would not install on a G3 iMac

I'm curious though, what has apple done, if anything, to prevent a user from taking one disk and installing the OS on all the machines he/she can find?
There's a torrent on TPB with over 10k downloads and it doesnt mention the disks being cracked or whatnot
