Unlike many teams in the league, Carolina did not drastically retool the basic look of the uniform.New FacesJeff Hamilton, Center, #51. Signed as a free agent from Chicago. Shifty 30 year old forward who scored 18 goals and 21 assists in 70 games last season (his first full year in the league). Will likely start on the fourth line but will see powerplay time at the point and be the first to jump into the top 9 if anyone gets hurt or underperforms.Brandon Sutter, Center, #14. While it is unlikely that Sutter will play a game in the NHL this season, he could make the team with a strong performance in camp. Drafted 11th overall in the 2007 draft, he has made a lot of noise this summer leading Canada's domination over Russia at the Super Series.Home AgainMatt Cullen, Center, #8. Finally Canes management caved. After a full season of wondering what kind of difference a guy like Cullen would have made on a team that never could quite get in tune, Carolina brought back Cullen in a trade, sending Andrew Hutchinson, Joe Barnes, and a third round pick in 2008 to the Rangers. Cullen scored 16 goals and 25 assists for the Rangers last season, and scored 25 goals and 24 assists for the Canes in the 05-06 season. He will wear #8 again thanks to the kindness of Tim Gleason who will wear #42.Who to WatchEric Staal, Center, #12. The newlywed and notorious party animal will look to improve on an 06-07 campaign that saw a 15 goal and 30 point drop-off from his 100 point championship year performance. If Carolina is to return to the playoffs, they cannot expect veterans like Ray Whitney and Rod Brind'Amour to again be the team's top scorers. The health of Erik Cole and Cory Stillman could be a big factor in Staal's numbers, as his best performances in 05-06 came when the three were playing together.Cam Ward, Goaltender, #30. Perhaps the expectations were a bit unfair for Ward in 06-07, as the Conn Smythe winner played under the shadow of his Stanley Cup performance while facing the rigors of his first season as a starting goaltender. With 60 games under his belt from last season, Ward will have to step up and steal some games as he did during the 05-06 playoffs. He remained in Raleigh during the offseason training, and has reportedly lost 20 pounds.DurabilityFrank Kaberle missed most of last season, and when he returned he never did get to 100%, leaving Carolina without a solid powerplay quarterback. He hasn't started off this season the way he wanted either, having knee surgery a few weeks ago. He will likely be ready for the opener, but his durability will be a big factor on the blueline. Glen Wesley is back for another go, and with a relatively thin defensive core, the 39 year old needs to stay healthy through the season. The biggest question mark of all is Bret Hedican, who pondered retirement throughout the offseason, but is ready to play and will be in the lineup on opening night. This team is very deep up front, but if defensemen start to go down, they will have to look to untested minor leaguers. Cory Stillman and Erik Cole will be the only question marks at forward, as Stillman never fully got going after shoulder surgery last season, and Cole continues to shake off the effects of his 2006 broken neck.Enough talk, let's play hockey.

Carolina has a fun hockey team.
9/14/2007 5:19:13 AM
Would it be wise to show up early for the preseason opener to get the tickets when they hand em out? Or does it typically not matter?
9/14/2007 3:17:34 PM
http://wral.com/sports/hurricanes/story/1816312/Staal, Whitney named alternates on the road, Wesley Stillman at home
9/14/2007 6:34:09 PM
I have no idea how many free tickets there will be, but STHs already have their tickets, so I'd get there reasonably early to make sure you get one, then use the extra time to check out the festivities and tailgate.

Went down to the RBC Center for a few minutes this morning to see the Group B practice (Sutter and Cullen both out there). It was just good to see some hockey again.

Canes win 4-3, four points for Staal and a nice 30 minutes from Leighton.
9/16/2007 6:14:49 PM
Hell of a third period today after a sloppy first two (to be expected this early in camp I suppose). The official word on the $9.99 upper endzone seats is that the deal is available only at the box office on the day of the game. Any other time and they are $20.Oh, and thanks RBC Center for the spinning goal lights. I've always wanted them[Edited on September 16, 2007 at 6:55 PM. Reason : .]

9/16/2007 7:09:18 PM
Spinning goal lights are good, but the delay caused by the goal judges being upstairs is not. Also, the new faceoff rule that caused a hand pass faceoff to be held in the center circle is weird and unneccesary.
9/16/2007 7:09:40 PM
any particular reason ward didn't dress? or was it just unnecessaryoh and it was cool getting to meet him, brind'amour, hedican, and adams at the autograph session
9/16/2007 7:46:00 PM

I do not approve of 99.9 so far. My radio in my bedroom couldn't even pick up the station because the signal is so weak.Borer with a goal and an assist tonight. Whitney and Walker score as well. Cam with 18 stops for the shutout.

Will there be $9.99 tickets on sale for the season opener?
9/24/2007 11:54:52 PM
I'd have to imagine those will be sold out. Guess it could be worth going up there when the box office opens that day.
9/25/2007 12:36:58 AM
I went ahead and paid for the $20 tickets to the season opener through ticketmaster, plus their 40% upcharge.
9/25/2007 9:16:11 AM
FYI, NHL.tv has a free preview until October 9th. This means you should be able to watch opening night on there, and the preseason games. The game against Washington is on right now, but it appears to be the jumbotron feed. No audio and there was just a message about watching out for flying pucks.
