I have an Abit IS7 and I believe the onboard ethernet has gone bad, as my connection keep randomly crapping out (all signal lights from the cable modem and the ethernet connection itself are still blinking/showing activity).

I tryed to install a seperate nic card but the comp wont even boot up when I install it.

Ok, thanks for that. However, disabling it and then installing the other card did not work. Im going to wally world to get another cheap card, as maybe the card I am trying is dead.

However, I will post more info about the problem I am having.

My connection from my cable modem to my computer seems to be fine, as all of the indicator lights on the modem and comp are flashing away with activity. However, I will get random intervals, usually from 5 seconds to a few minutes, of no connectivity in windows (all the lights are still flashing away). Here is a normal and spike 3d traceroute to show whats happening:

Oh yeah, incase it matters, heres some specs:

Cable Modem: Motorola Surfboard SB5101
On Board Ethernet: RealTek RTL8139, drivers up to date.

Normal, no spikes:

Numerous Spikes (noted by the grey areas in the chart):

During the spikes my connection looks like this, no activity:

TWC replaced the cable modem 2 days ago, but the problem has no improved. I update my onboard ethernet drivers, still no improvement. I also lowered the MTU and MSS (574/550), still no improvement.

Anything else you can think of to try would be great.

Replace your network cables too. That is a sign of a failing cable.

A new network cable did not help. I have not replaced the coax cable yet, but I do not think this is the problem.

I'd at least try another computer of a friends or something if possible.. True I doubt it's on RR's side but I had a similar issue at work, they replaced the modem then said it wasn't their problem.. a couple more calls later and they came out and changed some kind of amplifier outside and it hasn't given any trouble since.

I had this same problem a few weeks ago. The TWC technician traced it to a faulty line trap and I haven't had a problem after he replaced it.

true. you need to get them on the phone when it's messing up for them to be able to diagnose it better...but i highly doubt it's your computer

i had the same problem using the same motherboard.

it's outside. they replaced the outside line and the equipment in the box suppling the neighborhood.

the line or box got wet or developed condensation and interfered with the signal.

works again.

The problems did start happening around that time of the big storm we had a few weeks back.

But its hard to get them on the phone when it happens as its usually a short duration, I was on hold for 7 minutes the first time and it happened 3 times, but when they picked up it showed fine, so they said it wasnt them.

I got 2 new network cards, both show the same problems, so I know its not my onboard card. A TWC tech is supposed to come out, and I will mention the suggestions you guys stated. Thanks.

I'll bet money it's a bad trap or splitter.
