OK so I have a cello that I havent touched in literally 7 years. at one time i was quite the accomplished cellist...but then i just stopped playing. anyways, i want to start again but it needs a lot of work....like a new bridge, re-hair the bow, some gap filling etc. is there anywhere in Raleigh or the area that specializes in string instrument repair (besides the place on hillsborough st). i know its gonna cost me some scratch but i guess its worth it. any ideas aside from the chain places which most likely suck.

Probably too far for you, but Artley's in Gibsonville is amazing. They have taken care of all of my violas since I was in 4th grade. They are a small little shop and do the best work for very reasonable prices. I would say it is worth the trip, I would never trust anywhere else.

there is actually a place in durham that isnt a chain. it is off of 15-501 in the shopping center with kohls, bed bath and beyond, and petsmart. if you are coming off of I-40, turn right towards durham on 15-501. at the 2nd stoplight (se durham parkway), turn right and then turn right in the shopping center. it is in the building on your left at the very end right before the main strip with acmoore, etc.

You might want to try Bob Beerman's Bass Violin Shop in Greensboro. He's a super nice guy. He does excellent work on double basses, but I'm not sure if he works on cellos or not. If he doesn't, he might know someone who does.

for serious repair work, try jon pasewicz (sp?) in cary and artley's is okay. i haven't been to artley's since high school though. pasewicz made my bridge on my new cello and i like it. jon montgomery is going to be very expensive but he does good enough work.

if this is any testament to pasewicz, my old private teacher in high school would always use him and she lived in winston-salem (close to a 2 hour drive)

I took a Les Paul and a Strat there for a friend of mine who lives out of town--they really know what they're doing. They were working on a guitar for Tift Merritt when I was there.

You go behind the Building facing St. Mary's and go down into a basement workshop. You'll know you're there--you'll see all the instruments once you get past the partition.
