The wifey and I are going up to Davidson River/Pisgah area in October to fly fish for a week, can't wait.

I love catching panfish with my fly rod. I throw some small foam spiders on number 2 or 3 fly line with a 2lb. leader.

any wild stream in the western nc area is prime fly fishing water....the main problem is that many of these are cramped with overhang which makes it tough to get good casts.

no matter where you are, the best thing you can do is talk to some locals around a tackle shop to see what recently hatched b/c matching the hatch is key.

Weldon, NC on the Roanoke Rapids river is prime for Striped Bass fly fishing. You'll need to fly cast from a boat though.
rod: 8-10wt.
reel: something large arbor is helpfull with a nice disk drag.
fly line: sinking
leader: 7.5-9ft of 12lb which is what... 1x or 2x?
fly: clouser minos should get some action(must cut off the barb)

The boat is a must here, because the current. If you do some more researching, you will easily find some guides that will put you right on top of them.

If you have never used sinking fly line: you have to roll-cast to bring the fly and line to the top of the water, then bring the line up and false-cast to extend more line. then the presentation. Repeat as needed.

if you've never done it before, and you're semi-coordinated, you should pick it up rather quickly.

a week's a long time to be on one river.

o/w, there's always the "being in the outdoors" element of any outdoor activity that makes it worthwhile.

definitely check with the locals on what to use. also, a quick lesson for pointers wouldn't hurt either.
