so...selling my 325i...we have no license plate. what's the safest way for me to get the car to a mechanic in garner (from smithfield) per the buyer's request? take tag off my truck and slap it on there...any other ideas?

the most reasonable is to put another license plate on it but the safest is to tow it
8/29/2007 12:55:01 PM
if it has insurance on it, sure. although i will warn you i got stopped by a dickhead cop the other day right after i had bought a car, had just put the tag from my old car on it and put insurance on it and he made me have it towed home. i also didnt have the paperwork with me showing i owned the car so he was trying to say it was stolen and shit..not a good day
8/29/2007 12:56:51 PM
Yeah, we've got insurance on it, no worries there. I just didn't know if I should be overly concerned about putting another vehicle's tag on it. I can have the title with me, as well.

you should be alright.. the cop that stopped me was just being a royal cock and also said my proof of insurance printed off the internet wasn't sufficient and the previous owner had taken insurance off of it and he refused to call the insurance company to verify anything.. oh well, lesson learned i suppose.i'd still drive yours, just take all paperwork

i drove around with a cardboard plate (valid numbers) for about a month once. the cops never gave me shit for it, and i live near a sub-station.
8/29/2007 1:16:46 PM
DO NOT PUT ANOTHER CARS PLATE ON THE CAR. YOU ARE TAKING A BIG RISKif you had plates and lost it, then yeah you can put the numbers on a cardboard peice or something.you are better off driving it without tags than you are with tags from another car
8/29/2007 1:26:32 PM
I get your point...here's the story...had the car 2 years, let her uncle (car dealer in raleigh) have the car on his lot to sale. tags were removed at some point, tags disappeared. I might put the cardboard sign on there...with the numbers on the registration. If I were to get stopped, I could claim the tags were stolen, which may not be too far from the truth.
8/29/2007 1:30:43 PM
sure
8/29/2007 1:32:20 PM
Are the missing tags still current? If so I'd definitely go with a cardboard tag. You'll get hell if you get caught with tags from another vehicle on there.
8/29/2007 4:11:52 PM
just drive the thing and hope like hell somone dont hit u

it would appear that people are saying that the chances of you getting pulled over are lower with tags on the car than without tags my guess is that you are less likely to have your tags run with a bad tag on there than to be pulled over because of no tags
8/29/2007 4:34:41 PM
but if you get pulled with a fictitious tag, you are in a lot more trouble than if you get pulled over with no tag
8/29/2007 4:47:41 PM
definitely have insurance on itand i just recently found out that the tags were taken off my by father in law when he went up there one day. he's got it at home. I just don't know if the registration is up to date, in fact, i'm pretty sure it's not. what then?
8/29/2007 4:51:01 PM
^^exactly. you might be less likely to get pulled, but if you do your definitely screwed and in more trouble. it's really even debateable if you're less likely to get pulled though, cops run a large percentage of the tags they see just for the hell of it. i've heard them say that's the number one way they catch people with warrants, stolen cars, etc.
8/29/2007 7:12:31 PM
okay, so my options are:ride with no tagsride with wrong tagsride with expired tags
8/29/2007 7:14:15 PM
i rolled all the way back from charlotte to cary in my ram when i first got it with no plate!couple state troopers pulled up on me but then didnt care and drove off. i had insurance on it and the title with me tho.that was a fuckin long trip!
8/29/2007 7:25:02 PM
^^no tags. has everyone not been clear enough? if you're that worried about it, go to the dmv and get some temporary transport tags. then it's completely legal.
8/29/2007 7:29:32 PM
i'd go w/ expired tags that match the vehicle.
8/29/2007 9:07:06 PM
how much do temp tags run? I think remember reading somewhere it's just 5 bucks, but I'm not sure.
8/29/2007 9:14:41 PM
go with no plate or write the plate # on a piece of cardboard

the hell it is. you've just been lucky. i got nailed hard with it and so did my old roomate. like leave your shit on the side of the road, here's a ticket, etc.i've never had any problems with speeding in a work zone in nc. it's always been reduced to just a regular ticket on the spot. i did get ass raped on a work zone violation in florida, but they had a whole wild operation going on with some dude dressed up like a construction worker shooting radar out of a piece of surveying equipment. made it there and back no worries (cept for the list of things the mechanic "claims" is wrong with the car).went with original license plate, though, the tags were current. it's amazing how much misinformation gets passed along. it turned out they only lost the registration, not that they didn't renew it.
