so...selling my 325i...we have no license plate. what's the safest way for me to get the car to a mechanic in garner (from smithfield) per the buyer's request? take tag off my truck and slap it on there...any other ideas?

if it has insurance on it, sure. although i will warn you i got stopped by a dickhead cop the other day right after i had bought a car, had just put the tag from my old car on it and put insurance on it and he made me have it towed home. i also didnt have the paperwork with me showing i owned the car so he was trying to say it was stolen and shit..not a good day

you should be alright.. the cop that stopped me was just being a royal cock and also said my proof of insurance printed off the internet wasn't sufficient and the previous owner had taken insurance off of it and he refused to call the insurance company to verify anything.. oh well, lesson learned i suppose.

if you had plates and lost it, then yeah you can put the numbers on a cardboard peice or something.

you are better off driving it without tags than you are with tags from another car

I get your point...here's the story...

had the car 2 years, let her uncle (car dealer in raleigh) have the car on his lot to sale. tags were removed at some point, tags disappeared. I might put the cardboard sign on there...with the numbers on the registration. If I were to get stopped, I could claim the tags were stolen, which may not be too far from the truth.

Are the missing tags still current? If so I'd definitely go with a cardboard tag. You'll get hell if you get caught with tags from another vehicle on there.

absolutely not. officers will generally let a vehicle with no tags slide as long as it's just being driven for transport purposes and has insurance. putting tags on something from another vehicle will get you slapped with a nice ticket real fast, and isn't a light offense. especially if the tags are in someone elses name.

my advice, roll it with no tags but make SURE you have insurance on it. if you do in fact have a valid (not expired) tag number and registration and it's just lost, put the numbers on a piece of cardboard.

it would appear that people are saying that the chances of you getting pulled over are lower with tags on the car than without tags

my guess is that you are less likely to have your tags run with a bad tag on there than to be pulled over because of no tags

and i just recently found out that the tags were taken off my by father in law when he went up there one day. he's got it at home. I just don't know if the registration is up to date, in fact, i'm pretty sure it's not. what then?

it's really even debateable if you're less likely to get pulled though, cops run a large percentage of the tags they see just for the hell of it. i've heard them say that's the number one way they catch people with warrants, stolen cars, etc.

couple state troopers pulled up on me but then didnt care and drove off. i had insurance on it and the title with me tho.

bullshit, its a fix it ticket, the lightest citation other than a written warning. ive caught ficticious tag citations 3 times, once with my brothers 92 toyota tags on the 68 vw a couple months ago. another with jen's rover tags on my bmw last summer, then once with some random tag on my old honda. you get a ticket, act right and they let you go home peacefully, you remedy the situation and it gets thrown out of court. now speeding in a work zone, theres a nice ticket.

i've never had any problems with speeding in a work zone in nc. it's always been reduced to just a regular ticket on the spot. i did get ass raped on a work zone violation in florida, but they had a whole wild operation going on with some dude dressed up like a construction worker shooting radar out of a piece of surveying equipment.

made it there and back no worries (cept for the list of things the mechanic "claims" is wrong with the car).

went with original license plate, though, the tags were current. it's amazing how much misinformation gets passed along. it turned out they only lost the registration, not that they didn't renew it.
