I'm sure there's a more likely explanation, but my machine hangs and does fruity shit if I boot with a usb drive plugged in.one for the bucket

I have seen that happen to dying hard drives. How new is his hard drive? See if he can run some drive fitness tests or something on it.

Yeah, GraniteBalls is on the right track for what you need to do.There are thousands and thousands and thousands of things that it could be...you need to do some more troubleshooting before anyone can venture any sort of guess as to what it might actually be.

this happened to me when my laptop overheated. it would then hang and on restarting, it would hang at the windows loading screen unless i went into safe mode. dialed down the power settings and haven't had the problem since.

his HD is pretty new, he has a raptor.and he can boot into safe mode all the time, so what does that mean?

It means you need to check the RAM. While you -can- run software diagnostics on the RAM, it won't always tell you if you have an error. So, the preferred method is to swap it out for another set and see if you have the same issues.

if he can boot into safe mode without an issuei'd say there's a driver issue.start checking for BIOS updates.
