I would recommend that you buy the book, unless you have a strong science background.

^ or you are a good note taker and have a good memory of lecture materials

You understad that ^^ is Dr. Eder the professor, right? That being said, I went to class every day, copied down the notes, studied minimally from the book and heavily from the notes, and made an A+.

dont buy the book. even if the book is useful for the class, unless you plan on reading it everyday to keep up with where the class lectures are going, it is useless and def. not worth having it to cram for the test the night before the test.

i bought the old version of the book, but i didnt really need it. the main thing in there is to just take good notes

i used my boyfriend's old book from when he took the class 6 years ago. like everyone has said, you don't need much more than eder's notes. just make sure you don't sit near people that talk all class so you can hear him, he'll emphasize what's on the tests.^5 the real question is: why does bkeder always have 5 posts? i've seen him post the last few semesters and he's had 5 posts every time.

lol bkederthats not obvious at all

All this discussion makes me think that I need to make my exams more difficult, relying more on the text book and less on my notes...............whada you think?

Throw some quasi-geostropic theory at them. Oh, make them derive the thermal wind.

when i took MEA 130, i went to every class, took all the notes, and paid attention. Im not one to actually keep up with the readings that the professors suggest/assign to read. When it came time for the test, I studied the notes hardcore, just reading through multiple times, and then reading the section review or the summary paragraphs for each chapter or section. I never really tired to hard for the class and got a B, which I think was fair, even though when I signed up for the course I thought it would be an easy A. I feel like for the work and effort for going to every class, taking the notes, paying attention while NOT doing everything I could to do get an A in the class, I feel like my grade was what I deserved.

^ Not really. I'd argue that it takes more effort to dumb the class down for the semi-literate freshman. Once you teach a class like this, you'll quickly be frightened at just how stupid some of the people in there are. When I taught MEA 135, the lab component for 130, I questioned how some of the kids got out of high school. I'd argue that all you need to do to get an A in MEA 130/135 is be literate. Look at the grade distribution and you'll get an object lesson in the range of quality of the students admitted to NCSU. Some people are really good students and don't even break a sweat all through out their undergraduate educations. Others panic when you given them a difficult assignment... like reading a paragraph or very basic algebra. I frequently got questions like, "How do I find the temperature? (problem in question: 30 = temperature/0.5)"I have nothing but contempt for anyone who thinks this class is hard. I think it should be harder. It's best to weed out the idiots early before they drain too much tax money with their state subsidized tuition. I think their parents will enjoy saving money by having the kids flunk out early as well.

^I agree a lot with the lab being an easy A, it's simple. I also have no problem for anyone trying to make MEA 130 of a harder class. For me, when I start a new class, I determine what the work load will be like and the required effort needed for the grade I want to achieve, usually determining what I would need to do to get an A versus a B. Based on the amount of work and effort I want to spend on that class I do what I need to do to get the grade I want. So if I felt like MEA 130 would require more effort to get the B I wanted to work for, then I would of done that extra effort to get the same grade.
