when coming out of reverse and into drive, is it bad to put it in drive while you're still rolling backwards? if so, why? /car noob

I would say that you stand to damage the gearbox and/or the crankshaftBut I am a n00b.

on a fwd, it puts a lot of shockload on the cv axles and tends to break them, its a lot worse on an automatic than a manual

yeah, i always come to a complete stop out of fear of damaging something, but i see people doing it from time to time so i always wonder what's the story

hahahaha, if you don't give a shit and you have an automatic you can do one hell of a fucking burn out reverse slamming that fucker

Depends on the transmission. I used to do it in my jeep a lot and paid the price for it, the transmission is a slush box now. I messed it up a few times doing burnouts like that too

meh, if only 1 or 2 mph it won't matter, the torque converter will take up the shock load without a problem

The biggest thing that would bother me is if the overrun clutch assembly (sprag clutch) might take a beating. But the sprag clutch usually doesn't engage or function when the car is in drive; however, if you drop it into L1, then it does.

^^ i've been driving a rental the last 5 weeks, so the thought occurred to me to try it

i usually put the car in park before it stops rolling. that's fun in a rental.

^yes it is, especially when you break the pawl.

the funnest thing to do is when you get an 05 silverado rental truck, swapping brakes, oxygen sensors, air filters, plugs and wires, i got a free tune-up and brake job from their insurance company
