"UPDATE: Two critical, one stable after Lovell Rd. crashes

By: Kevin Massey, Associate Producer
Date created: 8/22/2007 7:04:01 AM
Last updated: 8/22/2007 1:06:48 PM

One of the two motorcyclists hit by a car on Lovell Road early Wednesday morning is now in critical condition, as is a man hit while trying to help him.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office says James Dockery and Carrie Leonard were thrown from their motorcycle after Natasha Craft ran a red light and hit them.

Ronald Yeninas was among the witnesses who was trying to help Dockery when he and Dockery were struck by a second car driving through the crash scene.

Both Dockery and Yeninas are reported in critical condition at UT Medical Center Wednesday afternoon.

Carrie Leonard is reported in stable condition.

PREVIOUS: Two charged with DUI in Lovell Rd. crashes

The Knox County Sheriff's Office has announced charges pending against two drivers in a pair of collisions this morning.

The sheriff's office says 27-year-old Natasha Craft of Widner, Georgia, ran a red light turning onto Lovell Road and hit a motorcyle with two riders. The riders, 29-year-old James Dockery of Tallassee and 21-year-old Carrie Leonard, were thrown from the motorcycle.

People eating at a nearby Waffle House rushed out to help them.

The sheriff's office says minutes later, 27-year-old Charles Warren of Knoxville drove through the accident scene, hitting Dockery again and also hitting 40-year-old Ronald Yeninas of Bloomburg, Pennsylvania, who was trying to help the victims of the first crash.

Deputies say Craft fled to a nearby truck stop after the first crash. She is charged with driving under the influence, implied consent violation, leaving the scene of an injury accident, failure to yield the right of way, and failure to provide information and render aid.

Warren is charged with driving under the influence and violation of the open container law.

Other charges may be filed as the sheriff's office continues its investigation. There is not yet any update on the condition of those injured in the incident.

PREVIOUS

Two overnight car crashes sent three people to the hospital early Wednesday morning.

They happened within minutes of each other just before 3:00 on Lovell Rd. near I-40.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office was not releasing any details, but witnesses say a car hit two people on a motorcyle. When bystanders tried to help them, they say a second car hit one of the original victims, as well as one of those trying to help.

They say people tried to flag down the second car before it crashed, but the car wouldn't stop. "The guy just plowed him," said Kim Foster, who works at a nearby Waffle House. "They both went flying. It was awful."

The names and conditions of the victims were not released, and the status of the drivers of the two cars was unknown as of 7:00 a.m. Wednesday.

This thread should have been called "reasons not to drive drunk." There is nothing in here that's really a reason to not get a motorcycle.

I was going to make a woman driver comment too, but the drunk driving aspect of this is so overwhelming, i'm amazed someone would pick out the motorcycles.

You don't typically get run over if you're in a car.

Don't worry, several deadly motorcycle accidents happen daily and I'll be sure to post them.

Maybe it had more of an impact because I drove by the scene this morning and all I saw was a motorcycle in millions of pieces and bloody pavement.

Nice try on bashing the victims of the crime, though. How about reasons to not drunk drive?

This story shows the danger of being on the road at 3:00AM. Adding an even greater element of danger is being on a motorcycle at that hour.

Their injuries would undoubtably be less severe or even nonexistent had they been in a car rather than a motorcycle. Hence the thread title.

Does anyone remember the accident on Chapell HIll Road ( I think thats where it was) where a guy in a car stalls or something on the side of the road and six or seven people go out to help him and they all get struck by one drunk driver late at night and died? I believed this happened when I was a junior in college so like in 2004....

Yeah it happens in a car too... It has nothing to do with riding a motorcycle. When you learn to ride or you have been riding a long time, you learn to be a little more aware of your surroundings. Thats not to say that you wont get hit by a drunk driver; your risk definitely increases... but it also happens with people driving cars.

This is more of a drunk driving issue and for that matter it pisses me off. Some of my friends will do this and it makes me mad when I say "Hey no matter what time of night, if you need a ride, I will come pick you up," and I find out the next morning they drove drunk.. There are NO excuses.

a better title probably would have been "Reasons to not drink and drive" or "dumb drunk driver"

I don't see how this thread really lists "reasons not to get a motorcycle".

If you ride a motorcycle then you know the risks associated with it.

the situation was an accident between two drivers after an NCSU football game in October. both drivers were knocked unconscious and helped by 9 good samaritans. along comes an intoxicated Larry Veeder who plows into them with his van, killing 6, most good samaritans.

and i'll never forget, my friend was in the 1st accident that people stopped to help.

and it happened around 8:30, 9:00 pm.

A few days ago there was a story of a lady who was stopped on the side of the road and was walking around the side of it to do something when a van struck her, tossed her into the air and killed her instantly. they are still looking for the driver.

I agree, you do have to be more alert when on a motorcycle. you have to constantly have a way out and assume everyone around you is going to run into you somehow. There are people, like my bf for instance, who just don't do that. They fiddle with other crap and pay two seconds attention to the road. That makes me nervous and I point out every accident involving a motorcycle because the motorcyclist is ALWAYS severely injured if not killed.

I'll also agree that 99% of the accidents involving motorcyclists are not caused by them. car drivers don't give a shit about people being unprotected on the road and will be reckless.

Anyway this thread will be a continuous one which is why I named it what I did. My ongoing argument against distracted people getting bikes....

Yeah, one of my friends was involved in the 1st accident. I remember hearing about the accident that night, but I didn't know he was involved. Then, the next day I was giving some friends a tour of campus when this bitch news reporter walks up, and asks if we had heard about the accident as she was getting responses from students. Then, she asks if we knew the student who died, and she says his name. I freaked out, and for the next day or so I think he's dead and try to contact my other friends and finally I ger word that he was in the ICU, but that he was okay. I wanted to kill that bitch reporter.

i won't get on another one, at least not on the street.

definitely. i accepted the risks, and lost big. no one wins though. if you ride long enough, you WILL go down at some point. it's just a matter of how bad it is.

that's not to say it wasn't worth it though. the joy of riding a motorcylce is an undescribable experience for most people. i don't know that i would trade all the hell/pain i've been through for the 5 years of good riding i had.

A 23-year-old Scott County man was killed in a motorcycle accident on Friday.

Elmer Thomas Preston of Huntsville was heading south on U.S. Highway 27. Joey Ray Parton was trying to cross the highway from Carson Road when, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol report, he pulled into Preston's path.

The motorcycle swerved and lost control, skidding almost 50 feet before Preston was separated from his bike. He then struck the front of Parton's car.

No charges have been filed in the accident."

Gosh, someone needs to make a "reasons not to get a car" thread, and post in it every time they see a news article about a car wreck

TBH, there's a lot more wrecks that motorcycle riders prevent themselves from being in from motorcycle agility than actual motorcycle accidents.
