What are some of your favorites?

I'm interested mainly in places that need general labor (cleaning, yard-work, serving meals, etc.), and are flexible in the hours they'll let you go. Often, I am only looking to do a couple of hours here and there, and sometimes a full day on the weekend.

Ronald McDonald House. They can always use help cleaning the common areas and such. My in-laws are weekend managers at the one in Chapel Hill, so that's where I did all of my community service stuff back in high school.

IIRC, Habitat for Humanity meets Saturdays on NC State's campus, and they pretty much appreciate whatever help they can get.

Carnivore Preservation Trust (http://www.cptigers.org) is another good one, but they prefer groups, I think. In the past we've cleared cages of overgrown brush, dismanteled old cages, and even gotten to help feed the cats.

The Food Bank is great if you want labor. You move boxes, sort through foods, and stack pallets.

I'm gonna second Habitat for Humanity and CPT. Just get a group together for CPT, yeah.

Habitat is happy to have an extra person on-site even if you can't stay there the whole day. Just bring your own transportation if you have to leave, and bring some clothes you don't mind getting a bit dirty. They'll have some basic tools for you to use.

In order to volunteer at CPT you need to be able to either
1. commit to a regular volunteer shift. usually 4 hrs one day a week. You will need to fill out paperwork and do a training session before starting. There is sometimes a wait list to volunteer this route. As an animal care volunteer you will be trained in cage cleaning, food prep, feeding, watering, and some grounds maintenance. Or you can be trained as a tour guide. Most tour guides have also volunteered in animal care. You need to be very familar with the animals at CPT. Tours can last up to 2 hours and you will be asked a lot of questions about the facility, history, and animals there.

2. schedule a work group. groups can be 5 people up to 30+. You will be placed with a keeper or long-term volunteer and you'll be put to work. typical jobs include clearing out brush, trash piles, spreading grass seeds, picking up rocks, etc...

I've volunteered there since 2001. I used to do animal care but I know lead work groups of my students.

Btw, you don't need any mechanical experience to do this at all.

Catholic Parish Outreach is a good one

largest food bank in NC...provides ~30K people (catholic and non-catholic) with food yearly.
