You must have inadvertently hit the Turbo button. Make sure it is in the "off" position.

what was the first and last system to have the turbo button - i vaguely remember my old 386 or 486 having one but can't recall which and i'm too lazy to look it up

You probably have your sound card set to the wrong sampling rate.

or it's the turbo button

Yeah my last 486 had a turbo button. Went from like 35mhz to 55mhz or something like that. It's in the attic somewhere.
