Spybot Search & Destroy
Adaware 2007 Free
SpySweeper
Microsoft Defender

are the top picks, i'd install them all because they all have different databases and different protection techniques

also use HiJackThis to search for any "specific" malware running that may need a custom removal tool

also a good AntiVirus would help, the top free ones are:
Active Virus Shield
AVG

best places to look for malware/spyware would be the registry under the following locations:
HKCU->Software->Microsoft->Windows->CurrentVersion->Run (also RunOnce)
AND
HKLM->Software->Microsoft->Windows->CurrentVersion->Run (also RunOnce)

her virus definitions were expired, so I had to take norton off and install the free one from nc state

then i put windows defender on there

its about 20 minutes in to the virus scan and hit a jackpot of like 10 things, after that a full windows defender scan and i guess if that does not work i will install some of the other ones.

her kids blamed it on their friend who they say looks at porn on this computer

Tell'em to stay away from myspace codes and AIM smilies too.

my sisters are forever contracting internet herpes from those kinds of searches.

Installed Adaware, MS defender, and Symantec Anti-Virus.

All 3 found a bunch of things and deleted them. There is still BS popping up like crazy.

I purged the cache in internet explorer and installed firefox.

I don't know what else to do. I told her to start looking for her restore disks.

also be sure to run these scans in safe mode w/out networking

also be sure to run the 'on startup' option w/ S&D

you could also find a live cd w/ AV on it and run it that was as well

[Edited on July 30, 2007 at 10:32 PM. Reason : oh and a setting for ccleaner that cleaned up more of my shit than normal]

1.) SAV provided free from the university
2.) spybot s&d
3.) adaware

i have never ever EVER had any problems with spyware or viruses with just these 3 things running

and when friends have problems, add ccleaner and hijackthis (somewhat advanced, of course) to the mix and i have never failed to clean up a computer

^I'll vouch for 2 and 3, between the random spyware slowdowns (pr0n) on my computer and my ex's AIM and myspace viruses, they taken care of all the problems.

SAV is the only thing i have installed and only because they offered a 64bit vista version. Haven't really needed anything else. Never really gotten any viruses/spyware before on any of my computers. One time freshman year i think i got some type of adware, but i don't remember what it was. That's the only incident i can remember. Mainly because i usually don't let people use my computers w/o my supervision.

Man how do you guys get so many viruses/spyware. You CAN find safe porn out there. Is it just other people using your computers?
